I had saved up some money and could not wait to leave my parent's house, and go start life on my on, and on my own terms. There was no pressure from them to leave, and being a good child, they knew I wasn't going to make irrational & irresponsible decisions, but I still felt like
I wanted to jump out of bed, but a force held me down, and struggling was futile. I was forced to look at what looked like a cadaver that I had no idea how it got there. At that moment, the only reaction my body could give was for tears to roll out. Then the unthinkable happened;
The empty eye socketed cadaver began to move, it turned its head slowly till it was facing me- imagine that and staring into empty eye sockets. The force holding me down was no match for my passing out. My mental, emotional, and physical state had to shut down to reset.
I don't know how long I was out, I mean who keeps track of time when in fearville? but when I came round, I could hear birds chirping. "daytime is here, time to look for a solution" I thought to myself before I slowly opened my eyes, & then I remembered what I saw before I passed
out. I opened my eyes and jumped out of the bed. First off, it was still night, and second, there were no birds chirping. Power was restored again, and the empty eye socketed head turning cadaver was not there. I was beginning to understand why mental asylums were usually haunted
, because I was getting to the point where my mental state couldn't differentiate what was real from what wasn't, and chances were if I remained in that place, I would end up a possessed mad man taken to a mental asylum, or a possessed dead mad man that would come haunt people.
I began to hear whispers, like there were multiple whisperers whispering at the same time, and they were coming from the wall, and just as suddenly as they began, they stopped abruptly. "This was not the type of whisper in the dark Dionne Warwick sang about." I thought to myself
I was scared to lay down or sit on my bed because I had no idea what jack-in-the-box surprise was waiting; I was scared to step out of the room, and I was even scared to leave the spot where I stood. I was trying to gather my thoughts together when I heard an ear piercing scream.
I ran out of the room but stopped short of the entrance to the living room, because I could have sworn I saw something float across the entrance. I went into the bathroom and locked the door. I picked my towels, got into the bathtub, closed the shower curtain, and lay in the tub.
I remembered my parents, and thought about life before I moved out of their house, a tear rolled out. I could have called them, but I had no idea where my phone was, and I wasn't ready to leave that tub till daytime.
My heart froze when I heard a knock on the bathroom door.
-silence-
I could hear the same door that I locked, opening, and then footsteps. followed. Whatever it was came in with some form of light, because the whole bathroom lit up. "could it be my flatmate?" I thought to myself, but I was not ready to risk exposing myself.
Through the shower curtain, I could see the outline of a man, and I could hear the urinal being used and flushed. "Ghosts don't urinate. That has to be a freaking human." I thought to myself as I listened, I saw an opening in the shower curtain & decided to peep. I did, but saw
no one. I heard the sink's tap getting turned on, I looked again, but saw no one. It felt like whatever was in the house kept unlocking higher levels of fear for me. As I cowered in the tub, wondering if I would survive till the next day, the shower curtain opened, & I screamed,
but no sound came out; something, a phantom, an invincible entity had opened the shower curtain. I wanted to step out of the tub and run out of the bathroom, but noticed I couldn't move my body, and then I heard the tub's taps opening. The unseen force held me down till the tub
was full. I was being drowned in the tub, and I couldn't struggle or move my body. I could feel my life's force draining quickly away from me. I was dying, but I wasn't seeing any white light like people who had experienced death & coming back to life claimed they saw.
My subconscious mind began replaying memories of my existence, and just when I thought it was over, rather than being submerged in water, I saw myself in a box of worms. I was getting sucked in like it was quick sand, but instead of sand, it was worms; worms in their millions.
I opened my mouth to scream, but worms filled it. "Mom, I'm dying." was the only SOS message my mind could send out. Again, just as I was almost completely covered by the worms, I found myself back in the tub, alive and dry, but the shower curtain was open, and so was the door.
I stayed in the bath for a while and wondered if what I had experienced was what dying felt like. "If that's it, then nope, I don't wanna die." I told myself, got out of the tub and walked to the living room, it felt like I had gotten some new found confidence. I found all the
windows opened, and made to close them. I peered through one of the windows into the darkness outside, and as I looked left & right, a bloodied & grotesque looking face briefly appeared within inches of my face, I reeled back from the shock, my heart racing, I fell, & passed out
"He told me, but I didn't believe." A familiar voice said.
"I told you he was acting strange yesterday, he probably wanted to tell us, but knew we wouldn't believe." another familiar voice said.
"So you were here, & you don't know how you found yourself outside?" a familiar voice
said. I stirred and opened my eyes slowly, and found my friends staring at me. I shut my eyes again, to be sure I was seeing right. I opened them and the guys were still there.
"He's awake. Hey champ." Usman said.
I looked at all four of them, even my flatmate was alive.
They helped me up. Without saying anything to them, I just went inside the bedroom, picked my backpack, stuffed a few clothes inside, and just dropped everything, picked only my wallet, money, and found my phone.
"I'm leaving." I said when I got into the living room.
"Unless you have the set of keys for the 6 new sets of weird looking padlocks locking the gates, I think we need another strategy." Dayo said.
I looked from one person to the other, wondering whether I heard correctly.
"What did you say?" I asked.
"Well, after our experience last night, we wanted to get out of the compound to clear our heads, we got to the gate & saw the new development." Dayo answered. My heart sank.
"Wait a minute! Y'all had experiences?" I asked.
"One moment I was looking for that sound after you went to Dayo's, next thing I heard footsteps around me, but saw nothing, & then I saw something in the mirror, I looked closely & as unbelievable as it may sound, I got pulled in"
my flatmate answered. I wanted to laugh at the look on his face, but we were in a dire situation.
"Huh! You got pulled into the mirror?" I asked.
"Dude, I don't know, I just know wiun! I found myself in some damn smelly tight box & a scary voice saying this is where you'll lay."
He explained further. Dayo and his flatmates had their own experiences, and I don't know if it was a darkness in me, but deep down I felt happy that I wasn't alone in getting the unusual visits.
"What do we do? 'cause I'm not spending another night here." My flatmate said.
I touched his forehead, and wanted to touch his eyes, but he hit my hand away.
"What's wrong with you? We are like sitting ducks in here, and you're playing." My flatmate said, and the other guys just looked on.
"Oh, logic went out the window?" I asked.
"Dude, before this house, if I had told you I was pulled into a mirror, how would you have taken it?" my flatmate asked. He had a fair point.
"Guys, how do we get out? We can't even find our phones to call for help." Usman added.
"Let's go check the gate again, could be opened."
Tega said.
"Why's nobody saying anything about going to confront the landlady?" Usman asked.
"Exactly, it's her house, she either has a hand in it, or she knows something about it." Dayo added.
"Most definitely has a hand in it." My flatmate added.
I wasn't sure whether it was a
good idea to go confront the landlady or not, I just wanted out, and it did not look like 5 of us going to confront her would set us free.
"What are we waiting for?" Tega asked.
"So, what do you intend to say when you get there?" I asked.
"You? Wait, you're not coming with us?"
my flatmate asked.
"No, I'm gonna find a way out of this compound, even if I have to climb them trees. 4 of you couldn't handle whatever disturbed you at night, and you want to go confront the person who could be the master mind? How smart." I answered. As Dayo wanted to say
something, my phone rang- one look at the caller ID, and there was that nostalgic feeling- you know that feeling as a child where you were in nursery school, heard your mom's voice, but your teacher would not allow you go meet her 'cause it wasn't time to leave the class?
That was how I felt as my mom's call came through. I felt like weeping. I knew if I answered the call in the presence of my friends, they would make noise about what was going on & my mom would barely be able to make out what they were saying. So I stepped out of the apartment
unto the stairway's corridor where I heard the footsteps the previous night.
"Hello Mom." I said.
"Son, how are you? I had this sudden strange feeling about you at night, but your number didn't go through when I called." She said. My telepathic SOS message must have gone through
I remembered I was on call with my Mom and wanted to scream for help, but realized the phone had gone off. Something touched my hand, like a child holding on; I looked down to find what looked an undead child with empty black eye sockets, and black worms falling off its skin
I let out what should have been an ear-splitting scream, but no sound came out; my skin began to crawl as the worms from the undead body began to climb up my hands. I shook my hands and body violently as I dashed back into my apartment where I suddenly found my voice again.
The guys looked at me, and I could see fear and uncertainty written on their faces.
"What happened?" Dayo asked. I pointed at his apartment.
"The-there a-are chi-children in your a-apartment." I stuttered.
"Ha! They are back." Usman said.
"Who is back?" My flatmate asked.
"The children, they tormented us in different ways through the night, we kept hearing them laugh, cry & scream. I thought I was the only one that could hear them, till Dayo & Usman talked about their experiences this morning." Tega answered.
"That's it, I'm going to meet the landlady." my flatmate said.
What happened next was unexpected - right there, a dizzy spell hit five of us and we slept off.
It was a deep dreamless slumber; the type where you woke up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I had not felt that
I ran! I ran out of the apartment, down the flight of stairs and out into the compound.
I stood out there looking around and trying to catch my breath. I made for the gate as fast as I could.
"Going somewhere?" A female voice that wasn't the landlady's asked. I froze, because
I wasn't expecting it. I turned around to look at who spoke, but found no one. Frantically, I tried to open the gate, but discovered it was locked with 6 different padlocks.
"I can help you." The voice said again. I didn't know whether to answer or just think about a plan B to
get me out of the compound. Suddenly, the padlocks started opening, and then the gate opened on its own. I looked around, suddenly skeptical about running out to freedom.
"Quick!" the voice said again, and that alone was enough motivation to get me running out as fast I could.
I ran out, not minding what direction I was running; I wept for joy as I ran, and wasn't really aware of my surroundings, only aware of the freedom I had just gained. The plan was to run to safety, and then get people to come rescue my friends. I stopped abruptly, and my tears of
joy switched to tears of sorrow, as I suddenly realized I was running what felt like a loop, because right there in front of me was the gate I just left; so it was like I left the gate into the same compound.
Defeated & dejected, I just fell to the ground and bawled like a baby,
my dreams and aspirations flashing in my mind's eye and turning to smoke.
"So this is how I'll die here?" I thought to myself. I shut my eyes as the tears rolled out, and when I opened them again, I was back in my apartment; and I have no idea how it happened.
"Guy, where did you go?" My flatmate asked, and I couldn't have been more relieved. I turned around to see him and the others.
"I woke up and didn't see you guys, and something said we were going to die, so I ran out…" I explained all that happened.
Each of them had the same experience about waking up and not seeing the others.
"What if we treat everything as illusions and just pretend to live our lives normally?" my flatmate said.
"Are you okay? Like man you got dragged into a mirror and found yourself some place, pretend?"
Dayo asked.
"No, I'm not okay, no one here is, if you have a better idea to save us and get us out of here, let's hear it!" my flatmate answered.
At that moment, no one was thinking straight enough to come up with a better idea, or any idea at all. We had no choice but agree to
the idea.
My friends went back to their apartment, & I wasn't quite sure whether it was a good decision to stay apart, but I didn't object. I just lay there on the couch wondering what paranormal activity I was about to experience, and in no time, I drifted off to sleep
I have no idea how long I was asleep for, but I woke up from deep slumber to the sound of local drums and weird voices. I opened my eyes to see I was still on the couch; the sound was there, and I could see a glow from outside the window. Quietly, I walked to the window to take a
peek outside, and I saw something strange; right there in the middle of the compound was a bonfire, with three beings dancing strangely, the dances looked like the strange ones the witches did in the '90s series "Agbara Nla", and my heart flipped as I stepped away from the window
I went again to take a look; I could hear the eerie drums, and voices, but all I saw were the three beings dancing round the fire. The sounds stopped abruptly, and the three beings suddenly looked in my direction.
I stepped away from the window, and the drums began. I wanted to go take a peek again, but decided against, and just lay on the couch instead. I don't know how it happened, but in no time I was fast asleep.
"Help us!" A cold whisper said, and there was an echo. I got up slowly
, it felt like I was in a trance-like state, as I began to move slowly towards the window. I was conscious of what was happening, but I couldn't control what I was doing. Out of the darkness, I could make out three figures beckoning to me with their hands, like it was a conjuring
That smell of burning rubber and sulphur filled the air. They moved and I followed them out the apartment, down the stairs and out into the compound, as they moved they made these strange gestures with their hands. Their faces looked like they had been skinned, and teeth like
cluttered fangs. We got to the part of the compound where I had seen them earlier from my apartment. They began to dance around me, this time there were no drums; just them throwing their hands, rolling their heads, & moving their legs in weird ways. Like I said, I was conscious
of everything happening, but it felt like I could not control any part of my body, and there was nothing about trying, because the feeling was not just there - like I was paralyzed or controlled by something else. Suddenly, they stopped dancing, and then went few meters away to
drag a body; I don't know whose it was, but right there, they dug into the body's belly with their hands, pulled out the entrails, and began to eat. The heart was pulled out and held out by one of them, and I could see it beating. I could not look away, I could not shut my eyes
I could not blink, I could not move away, I could not move any part of my body, and I could not make any sound. They stopped abruptly and looked in my direction, and then began to move towards me with that body's heart outstretched and beating. The beating heart was forced into
my mouth, and next thing I knew, I was jumping up from the couch in the living room- I thought I had just woken up from a nightmare, but there was a funny taste in my mouth; that metallic taste of blood, mixed with an aftertaste of a rotten body. In the darkness I ran into the
bathroom to wash the taste off, but no matter how many times I rinsed my mouth, the taste was still there. I heard footsteps outside the bathroom; slow footsteps like something was being dragged. I went into the bathtub, lay down and closed the shower curtains. I heard the door
knob, and the door make a slow creak as it opened slowly. My heart raced when the shower curtain began to open; I was too scared to move. I looked up to find empty eye socketed cadavers looking at me. I let out a scream, and the bathtub gave way beneath me; I was falling through
space, through screams of pain and torments from people I could not see. It got colder as the free fall continued, until I landed with a thud on what felt like grass. I stood up and looked around, and breathed a sigh of relief as I recognized the backs of my friends.
"Hey guys."
I called out, but they didn't answer. I went to them, and few meters away from them, I called their names. Slowly they turned round, they had empty black eye sockets, and their bodies were like the undead. I stepped back, lost my footing and fell. Undead hands from the floor held
me down; my undead friends began tearing at my body and limbs. I screamed in pain and horror as I was being dismembered. I looked into their soulless eye sockets as they dug into my body. I have no idea what I screamed as my heart got torn out of my body, and I died.
"Wake up! Ah my enemies will not get you ooo! It is well with you! You covered in the blood. They shall surely gather but not by Him, l'agbara Olorun you will not die. Oya wake up!" I heard a familiar voice, but it sounded distant, but got closer. I heard another familiar voice.
I wasn't dead? Slowly I opened my eyes, and saw my mom. "It's another illusion." I told myself, but the violent shake from my mom to wake up made me open my eyes; I was quiet for a fee seconds, and then I screamed a joyful "MOMMY!!!" as I jumped oit of the bed and hugged her,
and hugged my Dad. I hugged them over and over and over again.
"Okay that's way too many hugs. What happened? Meanwhile your friends are waiting for you, they said you were supposed to go check an apartment togetherness." My Mom said. I paused a while trying to recollect, and
man was I glad to see my friends again. We hugged each other like we hadn't seen each other in a long while and it felt weird, and I also noticed something different about them.
"What's up?" I asked.
"The house you mentioned..." Dayo was saying.
"We are not doing it!" I said.
"Wait! You were so eager yesterday, what changed?" Usman asked. It turned out that all of us had gotten similar dreams, and that was really weird.
It was one hell of a hellish nightmare, one I never want to experience ever again.
The End.
Many of the experiences mentioned here are based on true life experiences. Thanks for reading and not really getting scared- it's just mild horror. 😏😛

"Do you believe in true love?" the lady beside me asked me as the aircraft began its cruise enroute Lagos. I looked out the aircraft window at the beautiful art nature was painting with the clouds, the sky and setting sun. I was an unapologetic nature lover, and nature was vast.
"Yes" I answered, turning to face her.
"Hmm... I think I've lost faith in its existence" She answered. That was not the type of conversation I wanted to have, considering I woke up in the morning to a breakup text from the one I thought was "the one", the umpteenth time.
"Oh well! Different strokes, different folks" I answered with a shrug, and looked out the window again, not wanting anything to come between me and the beautiful view I was seeing outside.
"It's beautiful!" the lady said. I looked at her, and she pointed at the window.
"Oh yeah"
Sleepy eyed and murmuring at the disturbance of what was a beautiful and dreamless deep sleep, I reached for my phone to see what the buzz was about.
I looked at the time "12:13am", tossed the phone aside, adjusted my pillows and changed my position. Few seconds later, I jumped
from the bed and looked for the phone under the duvet. What happened? Well, there was a lag in my processing the contents of my phone's notifications, and thus, an email was missed. Anyway, as I was about to sleep again, it hit me that one of the contents of the notifications was
an email from a company where I had been interviewed a week ago.
I retrieved my phone and alas! the email wasn't a figment of my sleepy imagination - I got the job!!!
I couldn't contain my happiness, but then, being somewhat of a loner, I didn't really have anyone to share the
