THREAD: I have written to Lord Geidt today following the publication of the Register of Ministers' Interests and his report clearing the Prime Minister of wrongdoing. There are serious issues that must be addressed urgently, and unanswered questions that must be answered. (1/11)
Firstly, Lord Geidt must publish all details, payments and correspondence regarding the refurbishment of the Prime Minister’s flat, which we now know was paid for by a Tory donor. Lord Geidt confirms "an interest did arise" but this interest has not been declared. Why not? (2/11)
The public simply will not have faith in the system of registering and declaring ministerial interests when these interests, debts and payments have still not been declared. Lord Geidt indicates this interest has not been published because it is "no longer current". (3/11)
This is unjustified and is no excuse not to publish the details. The only reason why time passed between the payment being made and the List of Interests being published is that the PM did not declare this interest and the government did not publish the List on time.. (4/11)
Secondly it is frankly not believable that the PM apparently had no idea who was funding work that cost tens or even thousands of pounds. Nobody else in the country will have had building work carried out in their home and not know or try to find out who was paying for it. (5/11)
Lord Geidt's decision to clear the PM of breaching the Ministerial Code is based solely on the conclusion that the PM was unaware of the financial arrangement. Lord Geidt needs to clarify how he reached this conclusion & provide evidence for it. Publish all the details now (6/11)
Lord Geidt's report says "the record shows no evidence of the Prime Minister being aware.. of the existence of these invoices". But we all know absence of evidence is not evidence of absence & the PM could easily have discussed this matter without an email or paper trail. (7/11)
This incident has significantly damaged trust in our politics & the system of declaring Ministers' Interests. That is why Lord Geidt must publish all correspondence & documentation related to the refurbishment so all details are in the public domain and fully transparent. (8/11)
Thirdly, Lord Geidt decision that no conflict or perceived conflict of interest has arisen will certainly come as a big surprise to any member of the public who has ever borrowed money, or asked anyone for a favour, or had a favour done for them, financially or otherwise. (9/11)
The public would legitimately & reasonably assume that the PM (or anybody) becoming indebted by a sum of tens or even hundreds of thousands of £££s would, or could at least be perceived, to have an obligation to the individual or institution doing them a financial favour. (10/11)
Lord Geidt must urgently explain why this basic assumption does not apply to the Prime Minister in this instance, but would no doubt apply to other members of the public who may find themselves borrowing money or receiving payments in their own lives to do up their flats? (11/11)

I came in to politics as a shop steward standing up for care workers on the minimum wage.

In my new roles I will focus on the future of work and the future of our economy, working with our trade union movement to deliver good, well-paid jobs in every region and every community.
I will take the fight to the Tories on their dodgy contracts and sleaze. And I will set out Labour's policy to replace Tory cronyism and cash for mates with an insourcing revolution so that public services are delivered in the public interest, not for private profit.
I will work tirelessly to reform our Party and deliver a policy agenda that will enable us to reconnect with the voters that we need to win, especially in our traditional heartlands, and show that the Labour Party speaks for the working class. That is our founding mission.

1/ We are facing a second wave and the prospect of further restrictions and a national lockdown as a result of the government’s failure and incompetence.
2/ Infections are rising, the testing system is collapsing and the government has lost control of the virus because they have failed to deliver an effective test, track and trace system.
3/ We have been here before. This is the time for swift, decisive action, and that action must be clearly communicated to the British people. With lives and livelihoods on the line we cannot afford to be too slow again.
