So for this story, I visit La Gloria Foods, which has made corn and flour tortillas from Boyle Heights since 1954. On a good day, they can make 120,000 flour/500k corn.
Their tortillas are staples of Southern California mercaditos, and restaurants, an icon of the scene with their festive logo
Mexican immigrants Manuel and Antonia Behar started with a small corner store and expanded it into two separate factories. For his efforts, he was inducted into the Tortilla Industry Association's Hall of Fame (yes, such a thing exists) in 2009 #respect
But now, the 3 Behar daughters who now run La Gloria are fighting to keep their business alive. The issue? The City of LA acquired their flour tortilla plant via eminent domain years ago. The two sides then tried to settle on an amount for relocation fees. Then...
KEY QUOTE:
Maria Vera (right) and her two sisters own La Gloria. She's been working there ever since she was a small girl serving as a translator for her dad. “When we first formed La Gloria, the city helped us,” she said softly but matter-of-factly. “Now, the city wants to take it away. ”

MY LATEST @latimes COLUMNA: Dodgers shouldn’t side with homophobic Catholics — invite the drag nuns. RT, porfas! latimes.com/california/sto…
@latimes So for this one, I took on news that the Dodgers had rescinded a Community Hero award to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a drag troupe that also happens to do a lot of community service, like we wrote about nearly a decade ago latimes.com/socal/glendale…
MY LATEST @latimes COLUMNA: Hold on to your donkeys, Democrats: Latinos going GOP in 2024 isn’t that far-fetched. RT, porfas! latimes.com/california/sto…
@latimes So for this one, I took on the topic that has been burning up conservative media this month: multiple polls showing Latinos going with the GOP/rejecting "Latinx" and other right-wing wackiness: latimes.com/politics/newsl…
MY LATEST @latimes COLUMNA: In Oxnard, a tamale festival persists after becoming husk of its former self. RT, porfas! latimes.com/california/sto…
@latimes For this story, I headed off to Oxnard, which has held a Tamale Festival in downtown for 14 years. They pride themselves on tamales from all over Latin America — this year, there were even uchepos and corundas from Michóacan! As @MexicanKeto would say, "FUUUUUCK"
But for the 2nd year in a row, the Oxnard Tamale Festival was to-go only, even as in-person tamale festivals rage are back this December, as my colleague @gsanroman2 wrote about earlier this week latimes.com/socal/daily-pi…
MY LATEST @latimes COLUMNA: Huntington Beach’s first Black councilwoman faces jeers with calm. No wonder the MAGA crowd hates her. RT, porfas! latimes.com/california/sto…
My latest columna focuses on Rhonda Bolton, the 1st-ever Black councilwoman in history of Huntington Beach, a city with a notorious white supremacist past/present/future. She's one of a handful of Black councilmembers EVER to serve in Orange County latimes.com/socal/daily-pi…
Huntington Beach, of course, is Angrytown USA, so you KNOW folks there were gonna be unhappy that a Black woman — a Democrat, no less — was now on their city council. latimes.com/california/sto…
