Why are adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) important?
- Children with +4 ACEs are 7.4x as likely to suffer from alcoholism and 12.2x as likely to attempt suicide
- Juvenile offenders are 4x more likely to have +4 ACEs

Supportive relationships can serve as a protective buffer
My adverse childhood experience number was 5. Luckily, I had a lot of great role models in the military, then a GI Bill during undergraduate to pay the bills, while I learned how to learn. I continue to have great mentors to this day.
Whenever I think of adverse childhood experiences, I think of this exercise on privilege we performed during my undergraduate at UC Berkeley. Up until that point, I didn't know how disadvantaged I was during my childhood. I was the last person.

The pandemic isn’t over.
If you're vaccinated, you can still become infected with COVID, HOWEVER the vaccine is effective in preventing the SEVERE disease that overwhelmed our hospital system. We're fortunate to live in a country where a part of the population has to be incentivized to get vaccinated.
As restrictions are lifted, we'll learn more in the months in the come. I hope people respect my decision to continue to wear a mask while indoors, as this virus is airborne and children are not fully vaccinated.

The Stuttering Association for the Young (@sayorg) is a national non-profit organization that provides support, advocacy, and life-changing experiences for young people who stutter, ages 3-18. Over 70 million people stutter on a daily basis, including 5% of all children.
I wish @sayorg existed when I was child, because I would have avoided a lot of shame & anxiety.

SAY provides a supportive space of empathy, friendship, and inspiration for children who stutter and their families. There are camps, speech therapy and a confident voices program.
As a person who stutters, it's an honor to be a part of the @sayorg Virtual 2021 Annual Gala Fundraiser. Join us on Thursday, May 13th at 7pm EST for an inspiring Live Stream Performance celebrating the voices of young people who stutter! saygala.org

A night of heavy clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and elsewhere in Jerusalem left more than 200 Palestinians wounded. The Al-Aqsa mosque compound is the third holiest site in Islam.

To own a tiger or other large cat in Texas, all you have to do is qualify for a permit. So who is eligible for a permit to own a tiger under Texas law? Just about anyone.
After seeing that tiger loose in Houston, I went down a rabbit 🕳. These are the popular exotic pets allowed in Texas. khou.com/article/news/l…
Tigers are not meant to be pets. If it were to get scared and attack someone then people would say “the tiger went crazy.”

Reaction to COVID-19 vaccine at prior BCG site. My fiancee received the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine as an infant in Mexico, which protects against tuberculosis and leaves a scar as shown. 1/4
The day after receiving the Moderna vaccine she developed a circular redness and itching at the BCG scar (representative photo shown) which self resolved in a couple of hours. Of note it was in the same arm as the vaccine but not at the injection site. 2/4
Interestingly 6 days later the localized circular redness and itching RETURNED at the site of the BCG scar. There were NO concerning features such as difficulty breathing. I gave her Benadryl and the symptoms resolved. I found one similar case online. 3/4 aaaai.org/ask-the-expert…
