Today, President @JoeBiden visits Tulsa, OK to participate in a remembrace ceremony honoring the lives of Black people killed by racist white mobs during an attack on 'Black Wall Street' in 1921. Cvg later 4 @CourthouseNews.

Marking the centennial of this dark day and the systemic economic oppression that persists (see: redlining, for one), the President & Veep are rolling out two initiatives to "narrow the racial wealth gap and reinvest in communities that have been left behind by failed policies"
The Biden admin plans on launching "an interagency effort" to address inequity in home appraisals and will toughen rules for housing discrimination. Disadvantaged businesses will see a boost too, the admin wants to increase fed contracting rates w/them by 50%.
As part of Biden's American Jobs Plan, in order to build wealth in communities of color, the admin is now proposing formation of a $10B - with a b - a fund to support community-led infrastructure projects that build local wealth, provide services and "strengthen social cohesion"
$15B will be set aside for "new grants & technical assistance to support the planning, removal or retrofitting of existing transportation infrastructure that creates a barrier to community connectivity.. mobility, access, economic development"
The admin also proposes a new Neighborhood Homes Tax Credit which it says would lure private investors to develop and rehab affordable homes; there's also $5B for a new grant program for communities who take steps to create affordable housing and expand housing for low income
Also a part of Biden American Jobs Plan, is a $31B investment for small biz programs that are aimed at improving access to capital, providing mentoring, networking & other assistance to obtain fed contracts for those in socially and/or economically disadvantaged situations.
The White House says it is aimed at correcting past harms, reducing pollution, creating more public/green spaces, supporting local biz, increasing job opportunities for all, and laying the groundwork for more equitable transit and affordable housing
The White House says Biden heads to Tulsa today recognizing atrocities committed there still "have echoes" in countless Black communities throughout the nation.
President Biden delivering remarks now, he toured the Hall of Survivors at the Greenwood Cultural Center today. During the tour, he met with survivors including Viola 'Mother' Fletcher, Hughes, 'Uncle Red' Van Ellis and Lessie "Mother Randle" Benningfield Randle, all over 100.
For much too long the history of what took place here was silent, cloaked in darkness. But just because it was silent, doesn't mean it didn't take place. Darkness can hide much but it erases nothing. Some things are so heinous, they cannot be buried, Biden says.
Biden is also the first president to visit Tulsa for the anniversary of this massacre of Black Americans by a white mob.
To all the descendants of those who have suffered, that's why we are here, to shine a light and make sure America knows the story in full, Biden says.
More in my report soon for @CourthouseNews.
Black doctors, lawyers, teachers, hospitals, libraries, churches, schools, Black veterans who fought, volunteered and came home only to still fought prejudice - these are the people who made up Greenwood before it was razed by racist whites.
Hotels, roller skating rinks, all around, Black pride was shared by the professional and working class who lived together side by side for blocks on end. Mother Randle was just 6, living with her grandma. She was lucky to have a home and toys and fortunate to live w/o fear.
Mother Fletcher was 7 years old. Van Ellis was just a few months old. They were children of former sharecroppers and when they went to bed at night in Greenwood, they went to bed in a neighborhood that was rich in culture, community, heritage. But one night changed everything.
Greenwood was a community to itself but it wasn't separated from the outside or the hate just outside its bounds.
There were laws enforced "by badge and by noose," Biden notes.

I've officially hit my limit on reading or caring about any/all generational war stories! It is all a bunch of silliness and I would bet that if we spent less time dividing ourselves up by age groups, we might find ways to achieve common ground on matters concerning all.
I don't care about Gen Z, Y, X, old millennials, new millennials, zoomers or whatever other thing I keep seeing trending on this site week in and week out.
The jokes are tired. The subject is tired. Yawn.
Here's what I've actually learned: I know 28 year olds with more common sense, grace and dignity than 58 year olds. I've known 72 year olds with more youth and glamor than 21 year olds. I know 10 year olds that are better cooks than 35 year old men.
It is all relative.
.@RepDonBeyer: "Senate Republicans took political cowardice to a new level today.... Mitch McConnell admitted behind closed doors that his motivation for obstructing this measure was entirely political calculation."
Beyer's statement continued: "At a time when radical right-wing House Republicans refer to a violent attack on our democracy – which resulted in deaths and widespread injuries of police officers – as a ‘peaceful’ event akin to a ‘tourist visit,'....
Beyer: "It is ludicrous to say...we do not need a bipartisan investigation to establish the truth. If you have met with Officer Fanone or the other brave officers grievously injured protecting Congress that day, know about Officers Smith and Liebengood...
President Biden releases his administration's budget today; he also visits Viriginia to celebrate gains against Covid-19; and yes, the Senate is still in today as lawmakers have not yet come together on the 1/6 commission nor the R&D/China package. More on that soon.
An insurrection without consequences is a dress rehearsal for the next insurrection. That is why we cannot sweep the events of Jan. 6 and what led up to it, under the rug.... Comparing mask requirements in a pandemic to the holocaust has a cost as well. "- Sen. Dick Durbin
We were all determined the mob wouldn't have the last word. We were determined to return to the Capitol that same day & continue counting Electoral College votes, Durbin says, recalling when R and D's alike were sequestered together during the insurrection, "shoulder to shoulder"
Durbin:By 8PM that evening, we were back on the floor to prove they didn't have the last word. Sadly we know now they may have the last word because the call for a bipart. commission to investigate this event & put on the record what happened, is being opposed on a partisan basis
“Covid cases are down, covid deaths are down, unemployment filings are down, hunger is down. Vaccinations are up. Growth is up. People gaining health coverage is up. Small business confidence is up. America’s coming back. America’s on the move.” - President @JoeBiden says in Ohio
Biden draws big laughs at his speech today. He says he won't call out any names of lawmakers who didn't vote for his rescue plan.
"But I have a list," he says, pulling the list from his coat pocket.
Biden releases his budget Fri. Its expected to be about $6T. His speech today on the economy is a rallying call; he specifically discusses infrastructure spending in China, Japan - they're making huge investments. "We must be #1 in the world to lead the world in the 21st century"
Rep. Robin Kelly, D-IL, who was in the gallery during the 1/6, expresses frustration with GOP lawmakers today in cmte referring to BLM as a terrorist org. "The way people talk, they don't even understand their privilege. They don't understand why there is Black Lives Matter."
"Just listening to the conversation, we don't count. And we do count," Rep. Kelly, D-IL, says.
Rep. @AyannaPressley, after listening to GOPers including Rep. Andy Biggs today make "both sides" comparisons between groups like the Oath Keepers and BLM says those who would do that, "spit on Dr. Martin Luther King's name."
