To combat ANY violence, not just male VAWG, masculinity must be reconstructed. The WHO defines gender as “the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed.” For us, dominance and being the protector are two of those socially constructed traits. 1/x
While this is most salient when dealing with men’s violence against women and trans people, it’s as salient when dealing with male violence against racially and religious marginalized groups, including other men within those groups. Protection can easily include protection 2/x

Is a socially constructed trait of masculinity and used to justify violent racism in addition to cisheteropatriarchal privileges, gender plays an important role in racial, xenophobic, and religious violence even when the targets are NOT women. 4/x
Gina Martin, a British sexual assault campaigner who led the charge to successfully criminalize upskirting in 🇬🇧 said, “You see, we aren’t dealing with an epidemic of violence due to how we develop traditional femininity but because of how we develop traditional masculinity.” 5/x
She said this regarding men’s sexual assault after the Sarah Everard murder and it’s aftermath. But traditional masculine roles of protector & male privilege to dominate lie behind racist, xenophobic, & sectarian attacks as well. It’s simply hidden if women aren’t attacked. 6/x
We need a different approach to talk about the ongoing racist violence, whether against people of Jewish descent, African descent, or Asian descent. That’s why I’ve been focused on individual acts of racist violence as acts of male privilege in addition to a hate crime. 1/x
If men commit most violent crimes, this applies across the board, not just when the victims of the violent crimes are women. Male privilege includes the privilege to violently enforce other systems of oppression besides patriarchy. 2/x
Men’s violence against women and trans people is what is thought of when most people talk about male privilege and men’s violence. Recent incidents where MOC have attacked Jews, Asian-Americans, and other minorities have led me to see the enforcement of racial and xenophobic 3/x
