Developments in Modern Political Economy with Prof Celestin Monga (@CelestinMonga) and Prof Abiola Awosika ImageImage
Why are Luxembourg and Switzerland, two small, landlocked countries with virtually no natural resources other than their people and neighbours, achieving remarkable rates of growth and are among the richest economies in the world? Image
Why have other small, landlocked countries such as Burundi, Bolivia, or Bhutan failed to ignite similar economic processes? How do some countries manage to escape the so-called middle-income trap?
How did Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, manage to launch a successful manufacturing industry, and put many of its labour force to work?
How did China, the most populous country in the world, lift out of poverty an estimated 600-700 million people in just about one generation?
Modern political economy has provided a wide range of answers to such questions. This lecture will start with a brief discussion of what modern political economy is, stress its relevance in the context of Africa, and frame it in terms of the various waves of development thinking.
The course then explores some of the main narratives of development economics and discusses the analytical frameworks and policy practices that underpin them.
Several interrelated themes are examined: growth theories and development; institutions and governance; employment; strategies that lead to inclusive growth and structural economic transformation.
The course involves some theoretical analyses and policy discussions.

#SPPGFaculty #ValuesBasedLeadership #SPPGFacultyMember
Political Parties are very large groups of individuals with a set of shared interests attempting to influence the political process, elections, policy outcomes, etc. A political party is a group of people who come together to contest elections and hold power in the government.
They in a quest for elective power, agree on some policies and programmes that will be presented to the society for the collective good.

#SPPGFaculty #ValuesBasedLeadership #SPPGFacultyMember
Resources are finite and so, failure to make informed decisions can severely constrain the capacity of governments at all levels to successfully deliver good and targeted outcomes.

#SPPGFaculty #ValuesBasedLeadership #SPPGFacultyMember
Whenever public choices and decisions are not grounded in strong analysis and shaped by factual evidence and statistical data, the result will be unfavourable to citizens.

At #SPPG yesterday, we had a very engaging evening on electoral discourse. The office of the citizen has never been more important, and the principal-agent dilemma more apparent.

#SPPGFaculty #ValuesBasedLeadership #SPPGFacultyMember
@faithlyn_7 was brilliant in her dissection of the electoral law and processes and on top of her game as one who is not merely academic about the gaps needing remediation.

#SPPGFaculty #ValuesBasedLeadership #SPPGFacultyMember
Her capacity to provide solid answers to the diverse range of questions from a super-engaged class made yesterday very special for the Office of the Citizen.
