👉 Indian GE (graphite electrode) prices for 600mm UHP grade is currently assessed at INR 280,000- 300,000/t ($3,800 – 4,100/t) and for 450mm HP grade prices are at INR 425,000/t ($5,800/t).
👉 It is anticipated that GE prices will increase due to a rise in imported needle coke prices from the Jul’21 quarter, which, in turn, has moved up on escalating raw material (coal-tar pitch and crude oil) costs.
👉 There is reduced supply from major needle coke manufacturers this year and Indian electrodes manufacturers are surviving on previously booked high-cost inventories, industry participants informed.
👉The international price for oil-based and coal-based needle coke is currently in the range of $1,500-1,800/t, which is expected to go above $2,000/t from Jul’21.
👉The ongoing EU anti-dumping duty investigations on China GE imports and the absence of Chinese electrodes in the Indian market are likely to be an added advantage for domestic GE manufacturers in the coming months.
👉After U.S. sanctions on Chinese GE manufacturer, Kaifeng Carbon in Jan’21, there is reduced presence of Chinese material in the Indian market, providing an opportunity to domestic electrodes manufacturers to fill the supply gap.
👉India’s GE imports from China, which had increased in 2018 (to 4,019 t) have slipped to just 2,718 t in 2020 and 414 t in the first four months of 2021.
