Ok, so this week is turning out to be really, really awful.
Anyone have any dog pics?
Thanks for all the 🐶📸, folks
I’m not sure how much of a difference they’re making today, but I appreciate the effort
PSA to aspiring journos: Unless you have the family or school/internship connections to start you on a unbroken string of full time jobs, do something else.
I'm 100 percent serious. I often get approached by aspiring journalists (usually on @LinkedIn aka the most useless platform for job hunting ever created) who ask me for advice.
It is all so very depressing because I have no good advice to offer. This is an industry in which...
...perhaps 95% of the jobs postings are fake because any publication worth working for will decide who they want to hire (ALWAYS someone who already has a full time gig somewhere else), then post the job and make the offer to the person they're poaching, then issue a nice...
...press release.
Unless the person asking me for advice already has the inside track on some good internships or a good first job, I can't offer them much advice other than to find another career goal, because unless they are perfect to start and remain perfect, there's...
...simply nothing out there for them if they want to work for legitimate news outlets.
Sure, they can do freelance work, but no one who matters will ever call them back when they can be talking to some staff writer at the NYT.
It sucks. It really sucks.
