I don’t find the turns all that surprising but it is tightly written! Also? White women be drunk as skunks. Sisters I know just aren’t drinking like that.
(It’s evo psych + Bowling alone) I do wonder about race and class differences, though. They get to the social class split in the 19th c. (which is new to me and interesting)!
Not that it means a thing, but Black women in my circles drink more wine as they move up the class ladder but it’s NOTHING like white mom wine culture. Nothing. It’s mostly conspicuous consumption.
Moving through academia and middle class white leisure spaces, I have been amazed at how much they drink. And I’m no slouch. But I have never finished a bottle of wine in my life. I couldn’t if I tried.
Yet these often small, sometimes deeply calorie deficient people will drink a bottle and a half in the time that I drink an old fashioned!
It is wild. Absolutely wild.
Oh! And white women buy you a ton of wine shit. I have wine rings and wine tableaux and shoe shaped wine glasses and wine art. They send it to you, like some kind of secret society ritual quest. So much wine shit. I don’t even drink wine! lol
That’s how they jump you in. They send you engraved wine jewelry from Etsy.
I will debate deleting this part because it might be rude. But also, please stop sending me wine word art. I am Black.

This episode of @reelsouth is about Black men who played and worked the (mostly segregated) golf courses in the mid 20th c. South. It is touching. pbs.org/video/muni-lai…
You don't often see Black men of a certain age and class in media this way, not even in documentary media.
It isn't a "big" civil rights story. But it I like small, intimate stories of the Great Migration Generation. This is one of those.
Almost every day on this app someone tells me they disagree with what I tweeted by arguing...for exactly what I just tweeted. And I swear to god it is working against my plan to become a good person.
Me: that's green.
You, a philosopher of impeccable pedigree and moral fortitude: I DISAGREE. THAT IS BLUE AND YELLOW MIXED TOGETHER
A couple of weeks ago I asked for books similar to a named book. A person recommended the book I named.
One time, I flew to New York to get my hair done over the weekend. Between mother’s travel benefits and my aunt owning the salon, it was actually cheaper than going to the salon at home. The girls at school did NOT see it that way on Monday. Whew.
I was in upward bound that summer (which should tell you that we weren’t rich) and my “best friend” stole my favorite outfit after this. In retrospect, I may have deserved it.
A conversation with vivian about gas shortages ends with a story about how Spanky had a white girl whose father owned a gas station so the Party was able to get the gas they needed to run the community ambulances during the 70s gas crisis. Ma’am. Spanky???
“Spanky could have gotten killed messing with that white woman. But, you know. You did what you had to do.”
