During our school sensitization, a student asked a question:
Student: if a boy spends his money on a girl and she refuses to have sex ; isn't it her fault if she's raped?
We took a vote to see who else agreed with this, to our surprise, everyone, but one boy... #SpotlightNG
Though shocked at the number of students in that classroom who were quick to say the victim, was to blame, we could not help but admire the courage of that one boy, who stood his ground and boldly condemned rape. Only the rapist is to blame.
This incident was a great teaching moment. The information children are exposed to via the society constantly seeks to blame victims of abuse and encourage rape culture. From family values, to media, religion etc. It is our duty to give them the right information.
We spent time teaching them about consent and the implications of sexual violence.
Children absorb what society throws at them and feeds them. It is important that children have the right values & knowledge always. #SpotlightEndViolence #SpotlightNG @unwomenNG
A teenager who feels entitled to another person's body today, because he spent money on her, could cause harm tomorrow. Time to act and ensure that we are instilling the right values in our children.
School sensitization programmes are great because you get to hear what students really think and you get the opportunity to correct false notions & harmful beliefs.
