I have time today, so I'll start here: I can tell this piece was written by a White man. While it may be true that what @jjg sees today horrifies him, the reality is that it's ALWAYS been horrifying to UXers from marginalized communities. A brief thread: fastcompany.com/90642462/i-hel…
He shares how the question he hears from leaders is "Where did we go wrong?". Let's be clear on who these leaders are because I doubt that most UXers who aren't White, abled-bodied, cisgender etc are asking this question over and over again...as a Black woman, Im not asking this.
Linda Linda, do you here leaders like @NancyDouyon @acarrolldesign @KristyT @katholmes @intrepidleeloo @albanvillamil @EricaJoy @SekaiFarai @iThink_iDesign and others from marginalized communities/backgrounds constantly asking the question, "Where did we go wrong?" .... nah lol
"Too many UX leaders have seen the field’s language and ideas co-opted and corrupted by outsiders who never knew or cared about the principles underlying the practices." << I came into UX from a counseling background & the pearl-clenching around being human-centered was shocking.
"Talk to any highly experienced UX practitioner these days, and most have a favorite method or practice that they’d like to see revived (or restored to its former glory)." << Sidebar, let's also talk about how many of these folks have their livelihoods built on these methods.
What horrifies me? The lack of accountability around the little we hear from the 1st wave of UXers (who were mostly White/able-bodied/cis/etc) talk about their own privilege, how it impacted the way they pioneered (or colonized?) UX, the systems that uphold White supremacy, etc.
And for those of you who felt triggered by the last tweet, I'll leave you with this:
We have a lot of well-known UX leaders who were able to rise to their positions/public status without having to deeply develop MANY (if any) of the competencies required to be holistically human-centered & advance UX in a way that considers the impact of unchecked bias & hate.
That's not a knock. That's just stating the reality. Now, make some room at the table so that our field can shift from a desire to be relevant to the practice of being more mature in our craft.

(1/8) Im healing & building a community at the same time. How am I focusing on scaling @hmntycntrd this year? Im not. Im focusing on how to provide better value, experiences, & content to folks, internal infrastructure/processes & making sure my team is able to thrive & breathe.
(2/8) I want to build something that lasts & I’m okay doing it on a different timeline than what scarcity culture demands of us. I remind my team often that we’re people and purpose driven first.
(3/8) So while we could add an extra live cohort or two this year & make more, that’s not the goal or point of @hmntycntrd. We’re about community care: across our team, the HmntyCntrd community & beyond.

I might lose some followers for this🧵but idgaf: Contrary to what your workplace is probably subconsciously teaching you & what your high school history classes failed to teach you, your belief that you are a good enough or nice enough person isnt going to #StopAsianHate 🤷🏾‍♀️
Your silence won’t #StopAsianHate either, more specifically, the silence between you & your Trump-supporting relatives wont #StopAsianHate. If you dont see the connection to 2020 Trump rhetoric to the hate crimes in Georgia, then this thread isnt for you. This 🧵 is for allies.
If you havent talked to/have zero plans to talk to any of your Trump-supporting relatives about #StopAsianHate..you might be part of the problem🤷🏾‍♀️and if that offends you, maybe youre not as anti-White supremacy as you think👀Time to put your self-appointed allyship badges to work
