"Yesterday I learned that our local Member of Parliament, Philip Lawrence supported an amendment to Bill C6 to Ban Conversion Therapy, on behalf of a local pastor of the Fellow Baptist Church in Cobourg, Chad Houghton...

For those that are not familiar with the Bill or what conversion therapy is; it’s a horrific practice of trying to change an individual’s sexual orientation and or a transgender/nonbinary person to be cisgender...

Essentially, this ‘therapy’ is torture and coercion to force someone to deny who they are. There is countless research on the subject, that conducting conversion ‘therapy’ on children or youth dramatically increases suicide rates and other lifelong negative effects on its victims

This comes on the heels of the tragic residential school discovery, which also illustrates the harm that can happen to children when our government and religious leaders try and force them to conform to their ideology...

Yet members of our community and our own Member of Parliament are advocating for a continuation of ‘counselling’ and ‘private conversations’ with the sole goal of coercing a child to be someone they are not in the name of “god”...

My family has personally sat down with Philip Lawrence about this topic and felt he was an ally, and a local representative that would protect trans children like our son. We have sadly learned that is not the case...

Gender non-conforming kids are some of the most vulnerable in our population. They need our love and support to grow and live authentically during a very delicate time...

We cannot change the past, but we can protect our children from those that would use religion and their position of political power to spread hate and force a child to live in misery being someone they are not...

it's supporting those in our community and speaking up when their rights and freedoms are being jeopardized.

Today Elijah and my family are asking to share this post and to be an ally to a vulnerable population that needs protection from those that seek to harm and force them...
