'Do Not Resuscitate' order for being deaf. Are deaf people not worth saving because of 'communication difficulties'?

Deaf people face communication barriers every day, but that does not mean their lives are of less value to hearing people.

It is concerning that a deaf person was deemed unworthy of saving in 2021. Our support manager at Slateford Green said:

"Everybody has a right to make a decision about their health, and that includes deaf people"

The #NHS did not provide this man with an interpreter or any communication support. In Scotland, BSL is a legally recognised language and every person has the right to represent themselves and access information in #BSL.

Our support team swiftly resolved this issue by arranging an appointment with his GP, and an intepreter was provided to smooth communication.

We want to share this story to shine light on the issues deaf people are still facing every day.

Booking an interpreter to ensure full communication and understanding is vital, and can even mean life or death for a deaf person.

If you need an interpreter for a #BSL user, please book one in advance to ensure accessibility and inclusion.
