1/ The 1+ year-old COVID pandemic meets the 40+ year-old HIV pandemic:

36-year-old woman with HIV was unable to clear COVID for 8 months. The virus mutated and mutated and mutated.
2/ The SARS-CoV-2 virus infecting this woman developed 13 mutations in its Spike protein and at least 19 other mutations elsewhere in its genetic code.
3/ COVID is surging in other African regions... countries where the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is high:

4/ COVID + AIDS = more SARS-CoV-2 variants,
& possibly vaccine-evading variants

So long as SARS-CoV-2 spreads anywhere we are not safe.

Even if cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are currently down in the US.

Even if we vaccinated 70% of the US population by the 4th of July.

1/ Here's why it's important to get that 2nd dose of COVID vaccine:

- 1 dose of Pfizer 49% effective vs symptomatic COVID
- 2 doses 93% effective

1/ Vaccinated people are protected.
BUT UN-vaccinated people are NOT protected.

Take for instance Washington state. COVID case rate among unvaccinated people is as HIGH as it was in LATE JANUARY, near the PEAK of SARS-CoV-2 infections:
2/ The COVID case rate,
hospitalization rate,
and death rate
for UNvaccinated persons
are similar to what they were on December 31, 2020.

3/ COVID is concentrating in COC in part due to lower vaxx rates.

- Before we had COVID vaccines: 1/3 of new cases were among POC in MD/DC
- Now that we have COVID vaccines: 1/2 of new COVID cases in MD and >80% of COVID cases in DC are among POC

Inequity worsening.
