BREAKING: Jesus Bonano Laureano, who’d been released from jail in Puerto Rico under habeas corpus has been found dead.
Police believe Bonano Laureano
was murdered at his home tonight.
He had been arrested & accused of murdering surfer Brian Ramos Torres. elvocero.com/ley-y-orden/as…
Jesus Bonano Laureano was in jail awaiting trial but proceedings were delayed b/c of quarantine/pandemic, & then the judge got sick so the suspects attorney petitioned to have him released. The constitution states no one shall be held in jail more than 180 days without trial.
So the suspect was well within his rights to petition for release. I asked the attorney generals office couldn’t more have been done to move the proceeding along to where this didn’t happen. I asked whether they thought about starting over the preliminary hearing with a new judge
I was told that the prosecutors office felt that if they were to start all over again it could complicate the prosecution in terms of calling back witnesses and relying on their memory of what happened.
I was told the prosecutors office was confident that the preliminary hearing would result in the judge ruling that there was enough evidence to go to trial and they wanted to wait for the judge, who was ill, to come back and then continue the case.
There was a fear among the victims family that the suspect might harm someone else while out of jail, though he was being monitored through an ankle monitor. But no one I was speaking anticipated the suspect would end up dead at the hands of yet another alleged killer.
A police report states that Jesus Manuel Bonano Laureano was shot several times on the balcony of his home.
President Biden says his administration will defend at the U.S. Supreme Court a law that EXCLUDES Puerto Rico from the SSI program that provides benefits to low-income elderly, blind & disabled people, adhering to the same policy as Pres. Trump. reuters.com/article/legal-…
“Biden...said in a statement that he opposes the (SSI) provision in question but that the Justice Dept. has a duty to defend it. The justices in March took up a U.S. govt appeal originally filed by Trump's administration of a lower court ruling that found the exclusion unlawful.”

The @lumaenergypr website is both slow, and not working at time, when it comes to allowing people to report outages in Puerto Rico.
Luma’s twitter also doesn’t announce major outages or update service request.
So, where are you without power now? Make sure to list your location.
Interestingly, @AEEONLINE is tweeting about outages but @lumaenergypr isn’t. I’ve called the Luma spokeswoman to find out if Luma is using the AEE account but I haven’t heard back yet.
Last night, in San Juan, during the premiere of the documentary ‘Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided To Go For It’, the mayor, @Miguel_Romero_, gave the actress a key to the city of San Juan, & named her the adoptive daughter of the Capital of Puerto Rico.
Since @lumaenergypr took over the transmission and distribution responsibilities from Puerto Rico electric power authority, on Monday, I’ve been monitoring the outage map this week.
•Tuesday there were 1,246 outages reported.
•As of now there are 614.
BREAKING: @lumaenergypr, a newly founded private company, is now in charge of all transmission & distribution of electricity on the island of Puerto Rico. Luma replaces the government run Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. The government approved is now official: at 12am ET.
THREAD: Nelly Gracia, her husband, and her son Eddie have power back on tonight thanks to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority crew which repaired the problem and restored electricity for Nelly and her neighbors, in San Juan, around 6:20pm local time.
With the lights back on, Eddie can now go back to receiving dialysis at home, 5 hours a day, 6 days a week. As of tonight. on the island of Puerto Rico 11,618 customers are still without power, and many of them have been without it for more than a week.
PREPA tells me only 35% of the workforce showed up for work today. LUMA Energy takes over operations of PREPA at midnight on June 2nd. Many workers have refused to show up to work in protest.
