Are you lost about what unique value to bring to the world?

• Don’t give up
• Don’t give in
• Give generously

Thoughts from @Nicolascole77’s piece so you can create treasures for others Image
It’s hard to give without expectation

We do these things, play these games

Expecting rewards in the short-term
When you have the long-view,

you are free to widely share
“I WANT to feel like I’ve already given 99% away for free, so that I have to work extra-extra hard to make that last 1% so incredibly meaningful and memorable that by the time someone gets there, it’s not even a question”
dailywritinghabits.substack.com/p/give-away-99…
Empty out what’s already in you

Cognitive offloading (frees up brain) while others can benefit

Get to the last mile (the 1%) and challenge yourself to create something even better
Create something you never could have imagined

Something that wouldn’t exist if you didn’t exhaust the initial sludge
When I first learned idea generation, I was told that in the allotted time, e.g. an hour, you wouldn’t get to the good ideas

Only at the end, maybe going overtime, is when the magic happened
99/1 is a different than Pareto’s 80/20

Pareto Principle: 80% outcome caused by 20% of effort

Gift Guideline: Giving 99% for free causes you to create the 1% to sell

How do you get to 99% faster?

Reminds me of prototyping: testing out a smaller-scale, incomplete version of the envisioned concept

Beforehand, no way to know the detailed design of what you will manufacture, so you prototype

Isolate small components to see what works
Integrate them and iterate as you learn
99% free stuff: experiments to see what resonates

1% final: stuff people want, but unique enough that they are willing to pay Image
E.g. iPhone

• Function: screen, electronics, software
• Form: shape, feel, carrying the weight around
• Interaction: how do users navigate the new UI?

Separate prototypes, tested, tweaked, etc

Converging over time, from three corners of a triangle into the center
‘97 from Apple researchers
My go-to reference on prototyping

• Function: implementation
• Form: look and feel
• Interaction: role

hci.stanford.edu/courses/cs247/…
Meta: I could have tabled this for deeper contemplation in an atomic essay

But decided to just throw it up

That’s my gift to you
TLDR

• Give to benefit others
• Give yourself mental space to create something even better
• Create your own category

Thanks @Nicolascole77
