@justinulysses @BeeBrookshire @Anna_Rothschild @amymaxmen The most vocal proponents of lab leak consistently posit lab manipulation of some variety.

Why?

Because as far as we know Shi Zheng-Li’s lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology collected bat samples from 2010-2015...
@justinulysses @BeeBrookshire @Anna_Rothschild @amymaxmen If those field teams had caught SARS-CoV-2 back then, it should have sparked outbreaks years ago.

Ok, so what’s left?

The WIV team safely brought SARS2 (or a close relative) back to their lab between 2010-2015 but then was experimenting with it in 2019. This is a long shot...
@justinulysses @BeeBrookshire @Anna_Rothschild @amymaxmen ...and it’s speculation.

Alternatively, the lab had continued field surveys into 2019 without telling anyone (speculation bordering on conspiracy theory)...
@justinulysses @BeeBrookshire @Anna_Rothschild @amymaxmen But the viruses collected by WIV from 2010-2015 are too dissimilar from SARS2 to serve as a foundation for genetic engineering.

That would have required knowledge of an unknown closer relative and willful omission of such a strain in published reports (full on conspiracy theory)

Fauci’s reply in the first email listed among BuzzFeed’s 3,200-pg FOIA is my mental response to just so many emails...
+1 on @DrJAshton. Great medical reporter.
Backstory: Fauci receives a boatload of reports to read every day. His staff helps to separate the wheat from the chaff.

"To explain where SARS-CoV-2 came from, look at processes with scientific explanations and precedents."

@d_samorodnitsky gets it.

"If the question is “are both hypotheses possible?” the answer is yes. Both are possible.

If the question “are they equally likely?” the answer is absolutely not." massivesci.com/articles/sars-…
"It’s scientific malpractice to pretend that one idea is equally as meritorious as the other. The lab-leak hypothesis is a scientific deus ex machina, a narrative shortcut that points a finger at a specific set of bad actors." massivesci.com/articles/sars-…

What would you like to know, Natalie? Do you have any other objections outside of the single tweet you've pulled from a thread of 30ish tweets?
@nattyover If you check the history books, you'll find that several science writers have covered this topic... theatlantic.com/science/archiv…

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change first met in 1990, where it predicted that GHGs could fuel global warming.

Even as more evidence accumulated, efforts to sow doubt delayed action.

The “natural origins” vs “lab leak” debate around COVID-19 has entered this realm... Image
Doubters of climate change often called for “direct evidence” -- or irrefutable proof that carbon begets warming begets catastrophic climate/weather.

Ex. The National Academy of Sciences report on June 7, 2001 was followed four days later by these comments by Pres. Bush. ImageImage
Despite years of research pointing toward anthropogenic disaster, the doubt led to a “both sides” conversation in news media.

To this day, deniers still yell “Ice Age!” as megafires and rain-packed hurricanes pummel us.

Most Of New York City Remains Undervaccinated As COVID Restrictions Lift

✍️: @clewisreports via @WNYC / @Gothamist

Most neighborhoods in upper Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island are well below half their populations receiving one dose.

When Israel rolled back its lockdown in mid-March, 50% had been fully vaccinated, and 60% had taken one dose.gothamist.com/news/most-new-…

COVID Cases Plummet In NYC—Just As Demand For Vaccines Does The Same

✍️: Me and @jakedobkin via @WNYC / @Gothamist

To track demand for the COVID-19 vaccines, the Gothamist/WNYC health team has been closely following the number of first doses given each data. First dose = new recipient.

This tally has dropped off, and the slippage started even before the J&J pause.

Fewer people seeking appointments could explain the decline--and why NYC pivoted to walk-up shots on Friday.

We obtained data from @TurboVax, a popular aggregator for finding appointments.

Its web traffic has dropped sharply over the past three weeks gothamist.com/news/covid-cas…
