Did the Beastie Boys really go to MTA?
Fantastic interview by @SarSchreib!

I love that the @beastieboys themselves heard the legend!
Sadly *SPOILER ALERT* the answer is no Image
But as they say, “they don’t tell these stories about me and you.”

MTA was a pretty wild place back then.

🤪🤪🤪

**Five Towns flip-out girl walks into shul Tisha Ba’av night**
I feel like there was a brief window I could have convinced my niece to wear this on Tisha Ba’av
“They’re like mournful but cute. Very tisha ba’av.”

Headed to the office for the first time since March 11 2020. 😬😬😬 Image
Yes I know it’s 2pm. I’m actually going to hitch a ride to Long Island. Still a headache.

Commuting. Is. The. Worst.
*Hierarchy of fears about returning to the office*

1) THE COMMUTE. TRAFFIC 😭

2) Return to public restrooms at work. Not enough people are talking about this adjustment.

3) Social anxiety. Making small talk. Eh. This will be easy to overcome.

4) Actual Covid risk

*Evolution of the frum celeb*

20’s: Yossele Rosenblatt

50’s: Herman Wouk

90’s: Spielberg’s mom

00’s: Matisyahu & Alex Clare

10’s: Mayim Bialik

20’s: Amar’e
To count on the list it needs to be a celeb known in the non-Jewish world who high school kids get some comfort and pride in knowing they’re frum.

“You know ___insert name of celeb___ ....they’re frum!”
And your mom let’s you know they’re frum like a year after their peek fame.

“Thanks mom, yeah I heard about Matisyahu.”

This doesn’t mean they’re not an important construct. It means that we shouldn’t confuse Torah and Mitzvos with denominational affiliation.
A currency analogy:

A bill represents a value. But it is not the value itself. And there are many things it cannot account for. A good approximation? Usually. Easier than carrying a cow to the market? You betcha.

But don’t confuse representations of value with the value itself.

👀 wow, lot to unpack here.

So, this is a trend many have seen coming.

But if we learn anything from the past, it’s that triumphalism is not healthy for anyone.

The growth of Orthodoxy should be seen as a greater communal responsibility to ensure that we nurture and protect Jewish identity for everyone. Image
The Conservative movement had similar #’s 60 years ago.

Marshall Sklare thought it would be the only denomination to preserve Judaism in America.

He was wrong. But that’s not the lesson.

No denomination should rest on their successes: keep bringing Jewish ideas to more Jews.
