SMS Novara (1850) - Wikipedia

The collections of botanical, zoological (26,000 preparations), and cultural material brought back enriched the Austrian museums (especially the natural-history museum). They were also studied by Johann Natterer, a scientist en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Novar…
collected Vienna museum specimens during 18 years in South America. The geomagnetic observations made throughout the whole expedition significantly increased the scientific knowledge in this field. Finally, the expedition's introduction of coca plant leaves made it possible to
isolate cocaine in its pure form for the first time in 1860. Before the 1996 merger with Ciba-Geigy to form Novartis, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals (Sandoz AG) was a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Basel, Switzerland (as was Ciba-Geigy), and was best known for developing drugs
such LSD The drug became a cultural novelty of the 1960s after psychologist Timothy Leary at Harvard University began to promote its use for recreational and spiritual experiences among the general public. In 1998, the company entered into a biotechnology licensing agreement with
the University of California at Berkeley Department of Plant and Microbial Biology. In 2007, Novartis sold the Gerber Products Company to Nestlé as part of its continuing effort to shed old Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy businesses and focus on healthcare. In April 2014, Novartis
announced that it would acquire GlaxoSmithKline's cancer drug business for $16 billion as well as selling its vaccines business to GlaxoSmithKline for $7.1 billion. Novartis announced during late 2019 a five-year artificial intelligence "alliance" with Microsoft. Also in
September, BioNTech has leased a large production facility from Novartis to follow all advance demands for its coronavirus vaccine in Europe and sell it to China. Novartis paid $1.2 million to Essential Consultants, an entity owned by Michael Cohen, following the 2017
inauguration of Donald Trump. Cohen was paid monthly, with each payment just under $100,000. Novartis claims it paid Cohen to help it understand and influence the new administration's approach to drug pricing and regulation. Prior to joining Novartis, he was head of H. J. Heinz
Company's North American business from 2002 to 2006. He was also a non-executive director of AstraZeneca from 2002 to 2007, as well as an advisor for the Blackstone Group. Blackstone was founded in 1985 as a mergers and acquisitions firm by Peter G. Peterson and Stephen A.
Schwarzman, who had previously worked together at Lehman Brothers.

Blackstone also ventured into other businesses, most notably investment management. In 1987 Blackstone entered into a 50–50 partnership with the founders of BlackRock, Larry Fink and Ralph Schlosstein. The two
founders, who had previously run the mortgage-backed securities divisions at First Boston and Lehman Brothers, respectively, initially joined Blackstone to manage an investment fund and provide advice to financial institutions. In 1991, Blackstone created its Europe unit and
launched its real estate investment business with the acquisition of a series of hotel businesses under the leadership of Henry Silverman. Silverman left the job with Ross, which had been secured by Silverman's father, a well known businessman himself, to join White, Weld &
Company an investment banking firm. In 1991, he left to head Hospitality Franchise Systems, an investment of Blackstone's that Silverman had overseen. He later build HFS into Cendant Corporation.

Below the sanctuary, the Wesley Chapel Museum displays many artifacts from
eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American Methodist history. These include church record books, the Wesley Clock (a gift of John Wesley, 1769), love feast cups, class meeting circular benches, the original 1785 altar rail, the original 1767 pulpit made by Philip Embury, and
Embury's signed Bible.[Crosby had been inspired by the success of the melodies of Stephen Foster,[88] so she and George F. Root wrote at least 60 secular "people’s songs" or parlour songs[89] between August 1851 and 1857, some for the popular minstrel shows. (Root had taught
music at the Blind Institution from 1845–50). The Foster Hall Collection itself was established in 1930 by Josiah Kirby Lilly, noted for being the president of the prominent Indianapolis pharmaceutical manufacturer Eli Lilly and Company. The collection originally began as a
retirement hobby based upon his lifelong love of Stephen Foster' s music, but it eventually grew into one of the major collections of American music and history. Lilly and his staff, with the help of some of Foster's relatives, as well as through contributions prompted by the
publication of the Foster Hall Bulletin, accumulated over 10,000 Foster items. Over the years the Lilly Endowment has acquired a collection of important Indiana paintings that were in danger of leaving the state, including works by William Merritt Chase, John Elwood Bundy, and
members of the Hoosier Group. The works of art are generally displayed at the foundation's offices on North Meridian Street in Indianapolis. In 1944 the Cincinnati Art Museum mounted a smaller version, in 1958 Amherst College held an exhibition of 62 works, 41 of which were in
the original show, and in 1963 the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, New York organized the "1913 Armory Show 50th Anniversary Exhibition" sponsored by the Henry Street Settlement in New York, which included more than 300 works. The next year she founded the
Nurses' Settlement, which later changed its name to the Henry Street Settlement.[4]
Two years later, in 1895, Jacob Schiff, a banker and philanthropist purchased the Federal style townhouse at 265 Henry Street for the new organization to use. The building was expanded upwards
with an additional story to provide more space, and Schiff donated the building to the Settlement in 1903. Jacob's father, Moses Schiff, was a broker for the Rothschilds. He became associated with E. H. Harriman in notable contests with James J. Hill and J.P. Morgan & Company
for control of several Western railroads. Schiff served as a director of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, National City Bank of New York, Central Trust Company, Western Union Telegraph Company, Union Pacific Railroad, and Bond & Mortgage Guarantee Company. He was elected a
director of Wells Fargo & Company in September 1914 to succeed his brother-in-law, Paul Warburg, who had resigned to accept appointment to the original Federal Reserve Board.[ These loans were the first major flotation of Japanese bonds on Wall Street, and provided approximately
half the funds needed for Japan's war effort. In addition to his famous loan to Japan, Schiff financed loans to many other nations, including those that would come to comprise the Central Powers. David T. Schiff's son Andrew Neman Schiff was married previously to former Vice
President Al Gore's daughter, Karenna.

Sony Hack: The Interview, North Korea, and Everything We Know So far | Time

Sony’s move came a day after a cryptic message appeared online threatening attacks against theaters that played the film, and several weeks after hackers first breached Sony’s time.com/3639275/the-in…

Series of tubes - Wikipedia

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart made multiple references to "Techno" Ted Stevens's "series of tubes" description;[14][15][16][17] as a result, Stevens has become well known as the person who once headed the committee charged en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_of…
