The U.S. tax code provides an excellent example of how collectivist efforts to impose cosmic "justice" result in rampant injustice, corruption, and unfairness. A fair an honest tax code is unthinkable because it would interfere with statists imposing their notion of "fairness."
A rational and truly fair tax system would not require a massive IRS to harvest vast amounts of information that could then be improperly exposed on a selective basis and turned into political weapons. There wouldn't be so many opportunities for the powerful to game the system.
A fair and rational tax system would have restrained the growth of the State, because the burden of government would be evenly distributed. It would be transparent, not the inscrutable, opaque, incomprehensible rolling disaster Americans are forced to cope with.
But we can't have that - it's probably impossible to reform the corrupt disaster we're stuck with, because there are too many special interests that profit from it, including the biggest special interest of all: the State and its vast horde of bureaucrats and politicians.
In a truly fair system, there wouldn't be so many loopholes, shelters, carve-outs, special exemptions, and onerous reporting requirements. Less information demanded = fewer opportunities for fraud. Simpler requirements = less corruption.
A fair and simple tax system would also be more consistent with individual liberty. False choices are not free choices. How can anyone be properly informed to make reasoned judgments, and therefore truly free, when nobody understands how the tax system works?
But instead of true, simple, and IMMEDIATE fairness - flat taxes filled out on a postcard by rich and poor alike, or the Fair Tax idea of taxing consumption - we're told to put up with rampant unfairness and confusion so politicians can deliver cosmic "fairness" someday.
That's one way to sum up all sorts of politicized trickery, from the tax code to "critical race theory" - instead of fair treatment up front, every day, we're swindled into accepting unfairness daily so politicians can build utopia of cosmic justice in the distant future.
The U.S. tax system is like a hideous Dorian Gray portrait of what bullshit socialist "fairness" really looks like - the boiling mass of corruption and tyranny at the heart of collectivism. It's the ugly truth of what happens when fairness is sacrificed on the altar of "justice."
Give politicians enough time, money, and power to hammer their twisted concept of "fairness" into the heads of their subjects, and nobody will even remember what actual fairness looks like. That's our tax system in a nutshell. It consumes its own failures to get even worse. /end
