After yesterday’s tragedy, I wanted to give you a window and a little insight into being a Muslim Canadian and into the Canada we experience (1/7)
I was born in this country and have dedicated my life as a cancer surgeon to alleviate the suffering of ALL Canadians. I LOVE MY country. So why is on days like today we’re made to feel we don’t belong? (2/7)
I spent 15 years in post-secondary education and during every stage I was exposed to some form of #islamophobia. Even random #islamophobic jokes, often made teasingly without negative intent, serves to propagate these feelings of not belonging (3/7)
What gives anyone else more of a right to feel a sense of identity and belonging in Canada? Where does this need to discriminate come from? We need a root cause assessment of where this hate is both EMANATING from and who it is being PROPAGATED by (4/7)
ALL OF THIS MUST STOP. Last night,my family went for a walk, and around every corner we thought twice about whether we should continue or go home.Thankfully my children are too young to understand what was happening, but I pray for their sake we as a society address this soon (5/7)
This is not the Canada I know, I grew up in, and take pride in. This won’t shake me, my family, or deter us from contributing. It won’t push us away. Muslims are a fundamental fabric of Canadian society and we’re here to stay (6/7)
Islam teaches us to love and spread peace. I will continue to serve Canada and Canadians, I will continue to dedicate my days and nights into treating the ill and saving lives and I will continue to strive to be the best form of myself, as a Muslim, and as a Canadian (7/7)
I scrubbed out of surgery, changed, drove home and started reading these replies. I am beyond words. I cannot express the appreciation for the comments and kindness demonstrated by EVERYONE. Together we will work to address hatred to ALL Canadians #endIslamophobia#EndRacism
