Heads-up for NeverTrumpers: the Left's new tactic of all-out "Resistance" would be applied with equal zeal against your Romney-style Gentleman Loser candidates, in the unlikely event any of them should reach the White House. They think it worked, so they'll do it again.
Have no illusions that Democrats would be willing to reach across the aisle and work with some milquetoast moderate GOP-E placeholder president who agrees in advance to retreat on every issue the Left thinks is important and swears off fighting in the Culture Wars.
The new tactic of Resistance will be invoked against ANY GOP president. The weaponized bureaucracy will be turned against them, just as it was with Trump. Their election will be declared "illegitimate" by the same Dems who currently shriek that questioning elections is treason.
And you'd hear more of the weird mutation of Resistance that we've been getting over the past six months: left-wing media and bureaucrats saying they couldn't do their jobs, couldn't function at a basic level, because the GOP president was so awful.
That tactic has been successfully field-tested and will now be a permanent part of the Left's playbook. "We couldn't think straight because this guy (or gal) was so awful! We couldn't reason! Everything bad we did was the President's fault because [color] [gender] BAD!"
Yes, they'll do all this to the most moderate squishy collegial Republican president you can think of. The Resistance tactics would be especially harsh against a female or minority Republican president. "Here's Why Electing a Black GOP President Made Racism 1000 Times Worse."
The Left is 100% totalitarian now, and they will weaponize every bit of bureaucratic and cultural power at their disposal to attack ANYONE who is not of the Party. They'll blame GOP voters for causing the entire system to malfunction by electing a monster.
And you'd better believe they will run these plays against whatever Establishment tower of Jello the NeverTrumpers decide is the avatar of good political sportsmanship and sacred principles. Anyone you field will be treated like an abomination who justifies total political war.
It's not just rhetoric anymore. That's the big change, the transformation completed during the Obama years, when every square inch of the titanic federal government was weaponized, and against Trump, when the Left weaponized its own incompetence.
Of course the Dems always SAID the GOP candidate was a monster - remember how they ran against Romney and McCain? But now they'll ACT on it, treating any GOP president like an obscenity whose very presence causes D.C. bureaucracy to malfunction and American society to unravel.
It's absolutely delusional to think you can find some Republican who will be so genial, so principled, so unthreatening and moderate that the Left won't declare a New Resistance and wage total war to undermine them. Because here's the dirty little secret about "the Resistance"...
... it's all-out war against Republican VOTERS, against the Americans who stand in the way of the Left's totalitarian agenda, not just the candidate at the top of the ticket. It's delusional arrogance to think you can appease a militant ideology by nominating a negotiator. /end
