What a waste of time & money by Tower Hamlets Council at the request of the 'Local Campaigns Forum of the Labour Party'
Looks like Canary Wharf ward will stay as Canary Wharf ward
Bethnal Green as Bethnal Green ward
St Peters as St Peters
This follows
1/
democracy.towerhamlets.gov.uk/ieListDocument…
the Local Campaigns Forum (who are they?) requesting a review of ward names
The Council undertook consultation on changing the names of 3 wards:
Bethnal Green to Bethnal Green East opposed by 70% of the residents of the ward who responded to the consultation v 26% want change
2/
St Peters Ward to be changed to Bethnal Green West was narrower but 52% of residents in the ward wanted to keep name v 46% who wanted to change the name
3/
Canary Wharf (which I represent)
96% of residents wanted to keep the Canary Wharf name versus 2% who wanted to change back to Millwall
(I still want to use the name Millwall for other things but not to change ward name now)
See 2nd pic for reasons those opposed to change
4/
This has gone to two Council meetings, will go to another next week & maybe full Council
Council officers must have spent weeks of effort producing reports & analysis
We should not allow any un-named group to initiate future requests without more evidence of support first
5/
This has been a waste of time
Forcing @going4golds & I to spend time & effort on something that should have been dealt with in the next boundary review (see our letters below, apologies for the images but they are in the public domain now)
6/
We will ask the General Purposes Committee meeting next Thursday to park this issue until the boundary review (we must be due one in the next 5 years?) & not waste time at the next full Council meeting when resident responses so clear
& thanks to residents who responded to the
7/
Council consultation & the very clear mandate for no change from residents
I did not support changing CW name, did not trust the process by which the request was made & feared the division this might cause
But we have to reclaim the Millwall name from the hooligans some way

E-Scooter rental trial update on rules + what does Tower Hamlets Ride Through mean & how to provide feedback
a. You can rent from and leave an e-scooter in the Canary Wharf estate area
b. You can also rent from and leave an e-scooter in the following TfL locations outside

1/
their stations on their own land

c. Tower Hamlets Council did not want to be part of the trial of e-scooters which is why the rest of the Borough is ride through only, so you should not be able to rent an e-scooter elsewhere & if one left elsewhere the operator needs to go &

2/
pick it up but you can travel through other parts of TH on e-scooter
More here
tfl.gov.uk/.../driving/el…
You can provide feedback & comments here on the trial, issues, problems and concerns here i.e. is the Blackwall DLR bay in the right location?

ASDA planning application update & a prediction
I predict that tonight the Strategic Development Committee will reject the ASDA scheme
But new Chair & new members make it hard to predict
But we will probably lose on appeal
So a lot of effort has gone into making sure that any
1/
rejection is sustainable at appeal but this will be a test
This will be hard as last January most Councillors voted for Policies that encouraged more development of this site
+ we are missing our housing targets

2/
But with a record number of speakers against? (5 Cllrs & 2? residents)
I decided not to speak as normally only 4 people maybe 5 are allowed to speak so I wanted Labour Cllrs & residents to speak against as more likely to have an impact than me
Last time we had this much Labour

Freshwater on the Isle of Dogs & ASDA & the failure for a generation to plan ahead properly
For the ASDA scheme, Thames Water have said 3 times now on the 10th Feb 2020, 17th June 2020 & 12th Feb 2021 that there is not enough water
Councils Committee report does not mention
1/
On 19th May 2014 & 10th July 2014 Thames Water sent similar emails about issues with South Quay Plaza & Meridian Gate (aka The Madison) both on Marsh Wall close to ASDA both partially occupied by residents
"existing water supply infrastructure has insufficient capacity"
2/
South Quay Plaza nothing happened no condition was added
Meridian Place a condition was added but I cannot find any evidence of it being enforced
So for years Thames Water have said there are issues about whether their network has enough water for future developments

Boundary Commission 1st proposals for new Parliamentary constituencies in London as we get 2 extra constituencies due to voter ⬆️
Poplar & Limehouse will lose Shadwell & Bromley North wards
Bethnal Green & Bow will lose eastern wards to become Bethnal Green & Stepney
+ new
1/
Stratford & Bow constituency crosses into Newham territory from Bow
Means Tower Hamlets get's divided into 3 rather than 2 constituencies = more representation in Parliament = scrabble for who gets which constituency
But I suspect existing MPs in TH will stay in TH
2/
as bigger changes in Newham
Consultation is currently open until Tuesday 2nd August 2021
Boundary commission is independent body
Has been asked to redraw constituency boundaries to reflect voter changes as voters move around country

What teenagers do living in tall buildings?
Pictures taken Wednesday 28 storey up, the housing association have said they will make it secure
The Police have said if you see dangerous behaviour call 999 not 101, they think are urban explorers not local, I am not sure myself
1/
On one level I have sympathy for teenagers, I often ask developers what will teenagers do in their buildings for recreation? amazing views from the roof
And what investment has the Council made in facilities for teenagers in the last x years with all the money they earn? £0
2/
And if the teenagers were just hanging out and taking pics I might not say anything and keep it quiet but lately, they have started doing acrobatics, flips & tricks on the roof filming themselves and the pictures show some unsafe behaviour

Next Tower Hamlets local elections are 11 months away today
So a thread about what that means for you
Pics are from GLA assembly member election last month at a ward level - red indicates runner up
As you can see under First Past the Post Labour would win 100% of the Council
1/
But in TH part of the local Labour vote sometimes splits (for Respect 2006, 2010, then Tower Hamlets First 2014, then Aspire/PATH 2018), it is why you have people like @going4golds , @RabinaKhan & I elected, in part because of that split
2/
In other parts of London like Newham or Lewisham there is no split & you have 100% Labour Councils
If Lutfur Rahman runs then likely in May 2022 similar splits will occur again
The question is where? pic also from GLA election for local assembly member by ward
