Businessman Geoff Cousins quit Sydney's Australian Club in response to the vote barring women from joining.
He said the reasons given were trivial and unsubstantial.
"The décor of the club may have to be changed to be more feminine. Goodness knows what that means," says Geoff Cousins.
"If men were having lunch, they may have to change their behaviour. I assume that means make it a bit better."
"There are people [in the Club] who are still sitting in judgement in courts .... there are heads of corporations who sign off on their annual reports on grand statements about gender equality, yet here they are in this club, voting not to have women there," says Geoff Cousins.
One of the country's most exclusive institutions, The Australian Club, has voted to maintain the ban on women as members.
Former member Geoff Cousins says the reasons given were trivial, such as concern that the club's décor would have to change. abc.net.au/radionational/…
