The @FT is reporting that @Channel4 is to be #privatised. "The UK government is lining Channel 4 up for privatisation by the end of 2022 and will launch a consultation on its future within weeks." from @alexebarker@MattGarrahan
Public service broadcasters including @Channel4 make over 32,000 hours of UK-made original TV productions a yr, compared to just c230 hours by streamers. Govt stats show UK's creative industries contribute almost £13m to UK economy every hour.
@Channel4@Channel4's unique remit is agreed by Parliament+enshrined in legislation. It is 'to cha mpion unheard voices, innovate+take bold creative risks, inspire change in the way we lead our lives+stand up for diversity across the UK.' Will it survive #privatisation.
What will be gained by having a privatised commercial TV channel? What question will @Channel4's privatisation solve? I think we should be told. Why does the Government not seem to understand the huge success of our #PSB broadcasting landscape?
Innovation, creativity, public service, accountability, responsibility, technological advances, UK content reflecting our lives on these islands, thousands of jobs, are all served and created by #publicservicebroadcasters like @Channel4, @BBC@ITV. Why damage a unique system?
