He spent time with NICU nurse Kathy Tofte, who quit over the mandate. She is among 178 employee resisters who were suspended without pay, given a deadline of Monday to get vaccinated or be fired.
He also talked with primary care physician Dr. Josh Septimus, who has little patience for hospital workers who refuse to get vaccinated. "I think that's selfish," he said. "And I think it's unethical."
In the hospital's administrative offices, Alejandra "Alex" Chamorro teared up talking about what her life would be like had the vaccines been available sooner. She and her husband both got COVID-19; her husband did not make it.
Hospital CEO Marc Boom is behind the vaccine mandate. He says employees can choose but if they don't want the vaccine, "we're sorry to see them leave." Now Boom is hearing from colleagues eager to hear how he did it as other hospitals start to follow suit. usatoday.com/story/news/hea…
