Ok friends, we'll be returning to Day 2 #USCCB21 in just a moment.
First, discussion of a national framework for youth and young adults, presented by +Burns of Dallas.
And we are back.
+Gomez says there are some "questions" regarding the approval of amendments on "Called to the Joy of Love, and we'll discuss it again.
But for now +Burns discusses the development of a pastoral framework based upon Christus vivit, the post-synodal apostolic exhortation that came after the "youth synod."
Sorry, I've been talking to someone on the phone really quick. Not this isn't important. But the point is that I missed some aspects of this presentation. Sorry.
It's just that it turns out someone called me to explain that my vehicle warranty may have expired. Which -- thank God they called. So I had to give them my credit card and bank account numbers.
Anyhow, the question is whether the bishops approve the committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life, and Youth to develop a new pastoral framework on youth and young adult ministry.
The floor will now be opened for discussion.
+Rosazza, emeritus auxiliary bishop of Hartford:
This is very important and I support it. And we should remember young people in the military.
+Burns: Thank you.
+Blair: I hope that we foster among young adults efforts to reach out evangelically to their contemporaries.
+Knestout:
We should think about:
second generation American young adults
and young adults in the military
and ecclesial movements which have many young adults
and how social media impacts young adults.
(Last time he had his cathedral as his background. Looked great.)
+Burns: Bishop Knestout -- with all that, "you practically wrote the document! I really appreciate all that you're offering."
+Strickland, of Tyler, Texas:
I want to support +Burns and his great work, and keep in mind that in many cultures, the notion of young adult extends much further "than maybe the culture that I am most familiar with."
So I think this is great, and that we should keep that in mind
+Soto:
I don't think we included sexuality in the outline; we really should.
Also, we should give a prominent place to social justice, because that is very important to many young people. and that includes the environment and climate change, which the youth really care about.
+Burns: Thanks Bishop Soto.
+Ricken: Thanks Bishop Burns.
Do you plan on working w/ World Youth Day in Lisbon (scheduled for 2023) as a way to cultivate missionary leaders?
+Burns: Yes. I know it's been set back a year (from 2022) bc of pandemic. WYD is good. 33% of men who get ordained go to WYD.
Burns:
+Stowe, OFM Conv, of Lexington:
Often our engagement in youth ministry is preaching to the choir.
I see that you plan to do extensive consultation, and I was reminded that the Holy Father consulted with youth not involved in the Church before youth synod. We should do that.
+Burns: "Bishop Stowe, you are so right. It's important that we go out just beyond preaching to the choir. And it's important that we go out."
Bp Stowe, you mentioned gangs. In the Diocese of Dallas, we also remember unaccompanied minors.
"My point is, you're so right."
+Kicanas, emeritus of tucson:
Young people are deeply of concern to us as bishops.
"Someone once said the software of their [young people's] lives do not match with the hardware of the Church, there's a disconnect."
We need to talk with young people.
+Burns: "Thank you Bishop Kicanas, you are so right."
Ok, now the voting is open on this topic, namely, whether to draft a framework for . The bishops can vote until tomorrow.
+Gomez now explaining that on family doc, +Cupich asked that footnote be added and there was a procedural irregularity.
They didn't vote on an amendment proposed by +Cupich.
+Cordileone: +Cupich proposed adding "ff" to a reference to Amoris graf291 in the text of "Called to the Joy of Love."
My concern is that FF is undefined. It could mean the whole document. So if we're going to reference paragraphs, it should be specific.
+Cupich: I don't want only graf 291 in Amoris to be cited (in a section of "Called to the Joy of Love") because the whole of Chapter 8 is relevant to our considerations. So maybe we could just say "The whole of Chapter 8"
+Cordileone: that is also very broad. Citing 291 suffices
+Cupich would like to see "AL chapter 8" cited in a footnote of "Called to the Joy of Love" +Cordileone opposes. The bishops will be polled.
52% in favor of Cupich's amendment. 42% opposed. 6% abstained. Amendment is adopted.
That's that.
I am moving on to a new thread for the final agenda item.

There remains within some aspects of institutional Catholic culture a desire to be affirmed by the legacy legitimatizing institutions of American public life. The fantasy that if we obscure our weird little popish superstitions, the NY Times will think we're cool.
This is the residual gift of our immigrant past, and maybe the historical circumstances once made the aspiration of social normalcy understandable. But anyone can see the damage it has wrought to the Church, and it is time to stop caring that people will figure out who we are.
We do not let our yes be yes and our no be no, because too often we are trying to find some magical gnostic key to explaining the faith in a way that will cause no scandal. We are left causing scandal while failing to explain the faith.
In just a few minutes, day 3 of #USCCB21 will begin.
Stay tuned for live-tweets of the third day.
On the agenda today:
Results from voting on various issues, including the drafting of a document on the Eucharist, liturgical translations, the new pastoral framework on marriage, and the development of new pastoral documents on Native Americans and on youths.
The pandemic has however led to a greater appreciation of the Eucharist for some. But we worry that many Catholics may not come back to Mass. As St. Paul reminded the Corinthians:
In 15 minutes, Day 2 of #USCCB21 will begin. Today is a pretty full schedule of debate, and I'll be livetweeting it all right here. (Well, in a couple different threads, just to make it easier.)
Before we get started, just a reminder: I aim to give you a straight summary of what's going on, and I do that in real time. I'm not always 💯, and I am often paraphrasing. A quote is not a quote without "..."
If I make an editorial aside, I try to label it as such
*cont
And I urge you to take this as a real-time, on the fly, best-as-I-can summary of what's going. If I get something wrong, feel free to note it, but please know I'm not trying to spin, gloss, or editorialize here, I'm trying to capture it.
Hey everybody, the opening session of #USCCB21 is set to resume in just a minute.
Right now, kinda heavy jazz is playing in the youtube while we wait.
The meeting is about an hour behind schedule, which, for a meeting scheduled for 90 minutes, is kinda remarkable.
What happened? A virtual floor fight over a motion to allow in the agenda indefinite discussion of the "Eucharistic coherence" document, on the agenda for thursday.
Supporters of motion said that seeking consensus means it is important that every bishop be heard. Critics said it was a stall tactic or a "filibuster" of the Eucharistic coherence document.
Motion failed 59%-41%. Bps have told me they didn't think it would be that close.
