'Trese' showrunner/director Jay Oliva: Growing up in LA, I don't run into dwende stories or tikbalang very much, but my parents raised me with a lot of these stories. Working for something like this really meant a lot for me and my family.
Oliva: It is a dream come true to work on this project, especially being a Filipino and wanting to reconnect to the culture.
Oliva on the success of 'Trese': It's all about the story... really about finding the theme, which is about family, and duty.
Oliva on the potential renewal of 'Trese' for Season 2: It's really strong in the Philippines. Netflix told me that it's reliant on the Philippine market. The support the Philippines has given us is overwhelming.
'Trese' executive producer/writer Tanya Yuson on the challenges in producing Trese: Trese is led by Filipino creatives, but the production is quite global. Thankfully we overcame challenges through technology.
Yuson on the possibility of Filipino anime content to expand globally: We have a very talented pool, both from the craft side and the storyteller side. We don't want to be the only ones, we want to be the stepping stone for other creatives to come forth and tell their stories.
Yuson: We hope this is our contribution to lifting up all Filipino stories that deserve that global platform.
Animation Council of the Philippines President Miguel del Rosario on how important Filipino talents are in the global space: We're still producing Disney content and for other studios, for Western Europe, Canada, and North America.
Del Rosario: Filipinos are excellent at interpreting emotions. We understand the language, the humor, we know how to visualize them.
Del Rosario on opportunities for Filipinos during pandemic: We're full. We're sort of pandemic-proof. March to May that's our downtime, that was difficult because it's lockdown.
Del Rosario: Come June, we sent out computers to people's homes for our artists and we started working. Now we're back to 85-90% efficiency, productivity.
Del Rosario: We are very fortunate that we are in this industry compared to the ones hit badly by the pandemic.
Del Rosario on PH as a go-to destination for animation after 'Trese': This proves our capability on content development. This Trese is really a benchmark, this is the quality of Philippine animation. That's Filipino creation.
Comic book artist Leinil Yu on his first Marvel comic book 'Wolverine': That was a huge deal. It definitely set my career for life.
Yu on a possible release of a movie featuring 'Wave', Marvel's first Pinoy superhero: I've been receiving a lot of emails from fans wanting to pitch their favorite actresses they want to play as Wave... It would probably take a long while. Wave has to be established first.
Yu: The comic book is being produced right now. Unfortunately because of COVID, it has been put on hold.
Comic book artist Miguel Mercado: Being a big fan of comics as a kid, it's a surreal feeling that from buying comics books as a kid, now my work is on the cover. It's a dream come true.
Mercado: I would encourage aspiring artists to post their work on social media, tag the editors, the companies, I'm sure they would be thrilled to see your work.
