If I Die

An open letter to my 8 kids.

"We live a fairly crazy life and we live in a fairly crazy country.

If I die, I want you to know..."

(thread)
I love you.

I always have.
I would do anything for you.
I would gladly give you my heart.
Elizabeth Stone said it best,

“Making the decision to have a child - it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ”
Take care of your mom.

She carried you for 9 months and then gave birth.

Enough said.
People are more important than things.

Always.

Not everyone knows this.
Forgive often.

It’s the best form of love.
Admitting you’re wrong shows maturity.

When you’re not wrong, silence shows maturity.
Trust me on this.

Collect adventures.

Not things.
Take risks.

If you risk nothing, you gain nothing.
You will have the opportunity to be kind every single day.

Take EVERY OPPORTUNITY.

You won’t regret it.
Some people say compassion is a sign of weakness.

Being compassionate is about giving every ounce of love you’ve got.

That’s not weakness. That’s strength.
Stand for something.

Stand for someone.

The world needs your voice not your fear.
Put your heart out there.

It will probably get broken.

Probably more than once.

I assure you, it’s worth it.
Leave your phone in the car when you go on a date.

Wherever you are, be there.
Help those less fortunate.

Pray for the opportunity every day.
Take care of your body.

Meditate.
Eat real food.
Exercise.
Get enough sleep.
Always be reading.

Start with the Bible.

Then Big Magic, Atomic Habits and Outliers.
Travel often.

Visit 3rd world countries.

Discover cultures not vacation spots.
Quality friends > Quantity of friends.

Every day, all day long.
You can’t always trust what someone says.

You can always trust what they do.
I expect great things from you.

Remember to be humble.
I’m sorry I left you like this. ‘Wasn’t my plan.

Follow most of the advice above and that should get you pretty far.
Drink a beer for me at your graduation.

Keep a photo of me near your heart on your wedding day.

I wouldn't miss it for the world.
Tell my grandkids and my great-grandkids I was a bad ass.

I’m ok if you exaggerate a little.
Love God.
Love your neighbor.
Love yourself.

I'll always love you.

Dad

8 Steps on How To Look Back At Your Life And Say, ‘Holy Crap! I kicked ass!’

(thread)
1. List 4 things you ABSOLUTELY have to do before you die. It doesn’t have to be extreme. Jump out of an airplane? Kayak down the Colorado River? Get a tattoo?
2. If you could do only one, which would it be? Personally, I’d go big. I’d go with the one that scares the crap out of me. Base jumping / swim with sharks = Pretty damn scary.
