If you're a journalism or curious citizen looking to use public databases to identify political sleaze in the UK, check out my new tool, Crony Connect*! cronyconnect.com
*Yes, "Crony Connect" is supposed to be a pun on the quiz show "Only Connect".

**Yes, I know it's not as good as @My_Little_Crony... I'm doing my best here! 😅
The purpose of Crony Connect is to bring together a few important databases in one place and search them simultaneously:

-@CompaniesHouse company registrations
-@ElectoralCommUK political donations database
-@UKParliament MP's register of financial interests
Here's a quick example of why it's useful:

Let's say we're interested in Lord Andrew Feldman – once described as "David Cameron's oldest political friend" – and definitely a Tory party bigwig.
What happens if we search "Andrew Feldman" in the @ElectoralCommUK political donations database?

Nothing!

search.electoralcommission.org.uk/?currentPage=1… Image
Now, let's see what happens if we search for Andrew Feldman using Crony Connect.

The tool will first help you identify the individual by their month/year of birth (in this case I know from wikipedia that Feldman was born Feb 1966). Image
Now we can take those three "director IDs" in @CompaniesHouse and see which companies these IDs are associated with. Crony Connect has already done the search and the results are available on the "Companies" tab...
There are 22 matching companies, and we can see when Andrew Feldman was a director and what his specific role was. Image
Now here's the fun part: Crony Connect is going to take *all those company names* and include them in the next round of searches.

So instead of looking for "Andrew Feldman" in the donations database, we're going to look for "Andrew Feldman OR Policy Exchange OR Jayroma OR ... "
This all happens automatically once you enter the name of an individual. So you just need to hop over to the Donations tab to see the results. Bingo! We can see that Andrew Feldman is a very significant Conservative donor, but his donations were made via his company Jayroma. Image
If you were doing a manual search, you could easily have missed this linkage. Or you'd have to manually go back and forth between Companies House and the donations database.

Let Crony Connect do the hard work for you! cronyconnect.com
Of course, this tool is no substitute for careful, manual fact-checking. (Remember, different people can have the same name and month of birth!)
If you're interested in how it works, I wrote a blog post walking through the code: sophie-e-hill.com/post/2021-06-1…
This tool is still "in beta" (aka, might break at any moment) so please send me bug reports or general feedback via email (sophie DOT eva DOT hill AT gmail.com) or Twitter!

Lord James Bethell, the quintissential aristocratic failson, should not be allowed within 1,000 yards of government, let alone have a ministerial position.
After just 1 year in government, Lord Bethell has already implicated himself in multiple scandals, demonstrating an astonishing lack of integrity.

He must resign.
Here's a quick recap of some of his scandals... 🧵

One very simple heuristic that would exponentially increase the rhetorical effectiveness of Labour MPs is to focus on the facts of a given issue and never venture into the meta-discussion of "what does the public think about us talking about this".
Trying to shape public opinion as an opposition party is hard. You need to grab every opportunity to lay out the facts of an issue and draw a clear contrast between your party and the government.
Trying to make some kind of obscure media critique during an interview with the media is a waste of time. And the opportunity cost is huge.

i just got my teaching evals from last semester and my students were so niiiice 😭😭
special shout-out to the person who wanted to clarify that i am "funny haha"
i started using "podcast voice" for teaching on Zoom -- which is where you talk softly right into a lapel mic -- and multiple students said it was "relaxing"... success!!

Harvard prez: “On behalf of the Harvard community, I apologize to Dr. Terry Karl for the University’s failure to assure that Domínguez met the conditions of his 1983 sanction. Harvard failed her.”

about 👏 goddamn 👏 time!!! 👏

I am incredibly relieved that the report is finally out. We had to fight for a LONG time to get this review, and it didn't get off to a great start when they spent more time talking to Harvard faculty than to *the women who were sexually harassed*...

I continue to find it incredibly frustrating that the Harvard administration couldn't just butt out and let this be an *external review*. The degree of micromanagement by the deputy provost was insane...

The Tories' 'chumocracy' over Covid contracts is destroying public trust.

Me in the @guardian 👇

In this piece, I try to take seriously the government’s argument that it was important to use “informal arrangements” in procurement given the urgent need to source PPE.
In response to which I make two points:

1️⃣ The “need for speed” does not mean we should throw basic anti-corruption principles out the window.

2️⃣ Based on the results, it is hard to believe that senior political figures were willing or capable of “pre-vetting” suppliers.
