10 Tips for #APUSH writing🧵

One reader's perspective - prepare for unpopular opinions.
#10: Don't bother with quotes.

They're not scored material. It's a waste of time.
#9: Separate out your ideas.

Paragraphs are your friend. Apart from having strong topic sentences, it helps guide our tired eyes.

This goes for SAQ, LEQ, and DBQs!
#8: Don't get fancy with formatting.

Underlining, bolding, etc. can make things harder to read. We can find your thesis, we promise.

Leave us the Doc # in the DBQ and move on.
#7: Keep the language simple.

We realize that College Board also runs the SAT. This is not that test.

Keep your words simple. Keep your sentences short.

Say what you need to say - move on.
#6: Know your vocabulary.

Your teacher is not lying. You do need to know it.

Proper noun evidence will make you or break you.
#5: Go for the low-hanging fruit.

There is no reason to tell me about that obscure law from 1677 when the Declaration of Independence will do.
#4: Practice under testing conditions

ALWAYS practice with a timer.

I'd recommend always practicing your writing with 5-10mins less than you'd have on the exam.
#3: Use the right tools

There are a million practice books out there. None of them will prepare you as well as the released materials FROM the College Board.

They make the test. They make the rules. Practice to win.
#2: Focus on what you know, not on what you don't.

Work with what you have.

✅You can make a 4 on the DBQ without using any documents. If you need to do that - do it.

✅If all you can come up with is a solid introduction - context and thesis = 2pts. 2pts > 0pts
#1: All AP exams are a points game - treat them as such.
