What is “NEGATIVITY-BIAS” & how to overcome it?

Imagine you’re on a two week vacation to Maldives.

You’re chilling by the beach in the day & partying in the night.

You get tasty food & relaxing massages.

In a misfortune, sometime during the trip someone stole your wallet.
What do you think you’ll remember from this trip once you’re back home?

The beach, food, music, and massages or the unfortunate accident?

Most of you will remember having their wallet stolen because negative experience affect you much more.

This is known as “NEGATIVITY BIAS”.
Your brain is built to be more sensitive to negative stimuli.

The bias is so automatic that it has become an unconscious mechanism.

According to studies, the magic ratio is 5 to 1:

“5 positive events to balance out 1 negative event”.

Yes, it’s that bad.

How To Overcome This?
1️⃣PRACTICE REALISTIC OPTIMISM1️⃣

Read, document yourself, understand situations, their effects & their long-term impacts.

The more knowledge you hold over a certain feeling, the less it will scare you and make you anxious.
2️⃣CREATE SMALL PLEASURES2️⃣

Since the ratio is 5:1, start creating small pleasures throughout the day.

The small doses of positivity will give your brain the much needed boost to counteract the natural negativity.
3️⃣RETHINK THE SITUATION3️⃣

Perspective is the key.

You are focusing on the negative, and trying to interpret it based on flawed perception.

Make a conscious effort to re-examine the situation in a more positive light.
4️⃣STOP THE NEGATIVE SELF TALK4️⃣

Control your internal negative thoughts

Start paying attention to them.

This can be achieved through mindfulness and meditation.

You can control your thought process by using mental models.

5️⃣CONNECT BOTH EMOTIONS5️⃣

It’s important to remember that positivity and negativity aren’t mutually exclusive.

You can do this by holding both emotions in your awareness while making sure the positive ones are more prominent.
I would like to end this thread with a story.

Once a King asked his ministers to give him something that if he sees in sadness, it makes him happy.

The ministers gave him a ring etched with “THIS TOO SHALL PASS”.

But the ring served another purpose. It worked vice-versa too.
Even you should accept this that nothing here is permanent.
