Story from @robferguson1

While eight migrant workers have died from the virus in Ontario and at least 2,168 have been infected according to approved compensation claims, shots for workers arriving this spring are getting credit for improvement from last year's spring of outbreaks.

But the Delta variant that is more contagious, is able to cause more serious illness in the unvaccinated and is expected to be the dominant strain in the province within weeks, putting health officials on edge.

Warnings continue about the dangers of crowded bunkhouses from groups advocating for the welfare of migrant workers who plant, harvest and package many of the cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and other farm products on dinner tables across Ontario and beyond. thestar.com/politics/provi…
“Even though we may have outbreaks, vaccinations will be the key to minimizing any,” says Kristin Kennedy, a registered nurse and chief executive of Erie Shores Health Care.

@jacoblorinc has the story:
thestar.com/business/perso…
Here's a look at one of these notes. "What we offer: Cash to your lawyer, no banks or additional fees. Buy "As-is" - no need to repair or evict tenants. No open houses, flexible closings."

Is that too good to be true?

Inspections were promised to stop the rampant abuse inside sweatshops. So why are workers’ conditions ‘worse than ever before?’

Investigation by @thecribby, @Em_CRJ and @kellyrbennett: thestar.com/news/investiga…
Since global awareness of sweatshop conditions emerged in the '90s, international brands have relied on auditor spot checks to address issues ranging from human rights abuses to building safety
thestar.com/news/investiga…
The promise of equitable working conditions and wages for those who make our clothes has been more a triumph of messaging than meaningful reform, this joint investigation found.

“It’s failed miserably as a tool to promote labour standards."

For the first time in its history, the Hospital for Sick Children admitted adult patients as part of a provincial response

NEW by @megan_ogilvie: ‘The situation was so devastating’: How Sick Kids transformed to treat gravely ill adults with COVID thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
“There was a desperate desire to be helpful.”

After provincial modelling predicted there could be 800 COVID patients in ICUs and physicians worried about the grim possibility of rationing care, Sick Kids enacted its pandemic plan of last resort.
thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
At first, it hadn’t planned to take COVID patients, instead proposing to admit others who were critically ill to help relieve some pressure in the health system.

“It became clear that wouldn’t be helpful; there wasn’t enough of those types of patients." thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
