The 2021 Digital News Report is out! #DNR21 Here’s a short thread about the Greek findings:
The controversial government funding of news orgs during the pandemic was heavily discussed last year - 54% of Greek respondents opposed the government stepping in to help commercial news organisations unable to support themselves, one of the highest rates across 46 countries.
The debates about the opportunities & challenges of social media platforms have reached Greece, with the Prime Minister calling them a “threat to democracy”. Yet, 69% of online users in Greece use social media to get their news, the highest share across our European sample.
Podcast use has been on the rise in Greece – 40% of Greek online users now listen to them often. Smartphones have overtaken computers as the most used device for news use.
Greek journalism was largely absent from the Greek #metoo movement - alternative news sources had to fill the gaps. #DNR21 findings re: public attitudes towards media representation in Greek journalism will be published in an upcoming report by @Dianeosis this fall (in Greek)
Overall, we find that existing key trends in digital news use in Greece continue. Greeks online a) show low levels of trust in news, b) use social media for news in very high shares, c) their attention is fragmented into many news sources. reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/digital-news-r…
