First split sessions of Day 3 #RCPsychIC and on this thread we're looking at the Changing landscape of publishing - promises to be a great set of talks.
First off is @KSBhui and he has lots of advice for med students, trainees and tenacious researchers. Show your work to ppl who are not interested and see if they understand. Pick your topic with care - one you feel passionate abt but one of broad interest. #RCPsychIC
@KSBhui Pick your journal carefully - think if the journal is efficient, the clarity and purpose of the journal and whether the audience is right for your paper, that's the most important thing. So many tips here from @KSBhui #RCPsychIC
@KSBhui Do you want a print or digital only journal? Some people prefer print in a rural area with a poor signal, or people in middle income country. Pick an established journal and focus on that. It can take six months or more to get an article in a journal @KSBhui #RCPsychIC
@KSBhui Don't give up, keep going, you will have to make revisions. Anticipate the readers' knowledge, don't expect them to have specialist knowledge, use plain English when you can - readers need to understand your argument @KSBhui #rcpsych
@KSBhui Respect other people's experience and advice. Be realistic about how long it will take to complete - understand that some papers take months to write, and definitely don't try and finish it before you've finished the experiment or analysis. @KSBhui #rcpsychic
@KSBhui Make it a joy to read, re-read your article as if you knew nothing. Enjoy the task and the struggle because it is hard. Don't be disappointed with rejection because it is part of the process and the learning. @KSBhui #RCPsychIC
@KSBhui Next up is @SKisely whose talk is focused on how to avoid becoming prey to predatory journals and dubious publishers. #RCPsychIC
@KSBhui @SKisely Some words of warning from @SKisely #RCPsychIC - ask what your colleagues know about the journal, what peer review process do they do, what fee structure is in place? If you've never heard of the journal, don't trust a website you've never seen before. Image
And we finish this talk with a link to an open access paper which covers the material of @SKisely talk cambridge.org/core/journals/… #RCPsychIC
We're now listening to the third speaker, Prof Kenneth Kaufman, whose talk is called Quality open access journals: RCPsych - Cambridge University Press portfolio #RCPsychIC
Prof Kaufman explains the progress made by @TheBJPsych in a few short years - amazing! #RCPsychIC Image
@TheBJPsych The BJPsych Open articles with the most citations, and those from 2020 including the number of text views (both were about COVID).

Prof Kaufman #RCPsychIC ImageImage
@TheBJPsych BJPsych Open is an international journal and that is shown by the profile of authors says Prof Kaufman #RCPsychIC Image
@TheBJPsych BJPsych Open takes quality standards very seriously - and succeeds thanks to the huge efforts made by the editorial work, staff team and the authors who submit articles says Prof Kaufman #RCPsychIC Image
@TheBJPsych Our final speaker in this session focused on publishing is @AnnAvouris whose talk is focused on The changing landscape of academic publishing #RCPsychIC
@TheBJPsych @AnnAvouris There's a strong trend towards open access - open access articles are downloaded 3x more and help ensure people around the world can benefit from the research #RCPsychIC @AnnAvouris Image
@TheBJPsych @AnnAvouris Open access articles get more citations and are 52% more likely to be quoted in a policy paper. They're more downloaded in the first month and this trend continues for 12 months after publication. #rcpsychic @AnnAvouris Image
@TheBJPsych @AnnAvouris After your open access article is published, is good idea to do some marketing of your own - posting a blog, making a short video, using social media are all great ways to promote your work @AnnAvouris - great talk on trend toward open access in academic publishing #RCPsychIC

Hope everyone had a good lunch! Now we look at the lessons we can learn from the 'asylum era', chaired by @DianeGoslar, an expert by experience. We'll also hear from @PeterNaxos, @claire_hilton6 and Dr Allan Beveridge. #RCPsychIC
@DianeGoslar @PeterNaxos @claire_hilton6 Change is desperately needed – such as the total dismantling of stigma – but we have evidence change can happen, says @DianeGoslar. One example of change is that Diane, a patient, is chairing this session. #RCPsychIC Image
@DianeGoslar @PeterNaxos @claire_hilton6 The first story comes from @PeterNaxos, who speaks of Henrietta, a patient in Kingston Asylum, in 1859. She found within herself a resolve she was never aware of, which enabled her to survive a situation which was totally at odds with anything she'd experienced before. #RCPsychIC Image
