"Improving the race" by dating white -- this interview with some NYT reporters about colorism points out that the Dominican Republic and its immigrant community in the US is far more explicitly racist than the country to which they emigrated... nytimes.com/2021/06/21/mov… Image
The reporter also refers to colorism within the black American community, but "improving the race" is far more *explicit*
The ultimate cause of this valuation, is of course, colonial domination by Europeans.

My point is that moving from Latin to Anglo-America means moving to a place where this valuation is much less overt and intense, and likely to be best preserved *within* your immigrant cohort
So making a "whitewashed" film is not actually acting in accordance with mainstream American norms and expectations -- but *Dominican* immigrant norms and expectations....
(If in fact the film was actually whitewashed.) A friend who lived in Wash. Heights for years said that the stills from the film do not show a group who are on average any lighter than the people one sees in Wash Heights.
However, it does seem there was no major character who was Afro-Latino....
Yeah dark Dominicans who appear black to the rest of the world tend not to self-ID as black

"Trigger Warning" is itself now "violent language" brandeis.edu/parc/accountab… Image
So, the inclusion of "picnic" on a list of "violent",
"oppressive" language is based on a falsehood reuters.com/article/uk-fac…
Rule of Thumb is another fake etymology.

Biden made a speech spreading this piece of odious misinformation as well

This way of speaking about the other is the norm outside of WEIRD (Western Educated Industrialized Rich Democractic) countries and those that bear their influence.

It's why those who have experience of those places find WEIRD self-flagellation on race so hard to fathom.
Now the anti-colonial critique would be that "well, now that they became wealthy atop exploitation of the rest of the world, they get to be moral"; similar to "now that they are wealthy through industrial pollution, they get to be environmentalists", which is in a real sense true
And then it comes down to whether the actual source of Western wealth and hegemony is domination and exploitation or the creation and scaling up of non-zero economies and societies.

The actual study of history provides the answer.

Resentful narcissists and histrionic personalities are justly marginalized; no organization can function without doing so. In their zeal to help the unjustly marginalized, we empowered the justly marginalized, often at the expense of unjustly marginalized (and everybody else)
Twitter created a layer atop the entire social and professional world solely devoted to empowering the histrionic and vindictive personalities among us
A massive force multiplier for grievance and dysfunction that specifically screens out the deliberation and fair process that serves as a check on such personalities in the real world

People used to talk about self-esteem; now they talk about trauma. They used to talk about racism; now they talk about "whiteness". It's part of the churn as pseudo-disciplines unable to improve student outcomes create the illusion of progress through changing terminology.
But these changes also confer different shades of meaning and different courses of intervention.
We created disciplines of educational psychology and the like; they were taken over by activists who idea launder radical politics into the disciplines; they produced an enormous body of sloganeering copypasta and an army of credentialed meme vectors

NPR's TV critic said In the Heights was a great movie even though it messed up the casting.

WaPo's critic calls for "accountability".
Lin Manuel-Miranda admired the American founders and probably thought his reimagining of the civil religion that crowned the second term of the Obama years would be more durable than it wound up being.
How did they decide that "White Latinxs" is the right way to render that term? (Both terms capitalized, s directly after the x...)

More non-white than white people support voter ID requirements news.yahoo.com/poll-majority-…
Once you start paying attention, reality nearly always burns the Narrative
These results give a good sense of what percentage of electorate follow the partisan cauterwauling. The minority figure just reflects typical person’s baseline intuitions. The white figure reflects greater share of whites absorbed in the kayfabe.
