In many areas, including parts of West Sussex, Wolverhampton and numerous London boroughs, the number of applicants was more than 80% higher than the estimated local population of EU nationals

There were about 920,000 applications from Romanians, of which about 760,000 approved so far

The problem is with the estimates of population and migration

The ONS, which calculates them, has described the survey conducted at ports that it uses as "stretched beyond its purpose"

The ONS is working on improving the migration figures

It has come up with a system called Rapid to make new estimates

The difference between the estimates for Rapid and the current LTIM method is a total of 839,000 people since 2012
