🏳️‍🌈 🇳🇱 Real leadership in Europe: Netherlands Prime Minister says Hungary should no longer be in the EU following its anti-LGBT law

Mark Rutte: "For me, Hungary has no place in the EU anymore”
Rutte if they refuse to withdraw the legislation: “then as far as I am concerned, then there is nothing left for them in the EU”

“This is such a fundamental point, that if we let that go, we are nothing more than a trading block and a currency”
🇪🇺 The EU is split on the issue- along broadly east/west and social conservative/liberal lines

As Rutte says: "But I'm not the only one to decide this: there are 26 other (EU countries). This has to be done step by step”
🏳️‍🌈 16 EU member states have today declared their support for defending LGBT rights. Though the letter below does not mention Hungary by name. They are:

🇧🇪 🇩🇰 🇩🇪 🇪🇪 🇮🇪 🇬🇷 🇪🇸 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 🇨🇾 🇱🇻 🇱🇺 🇲🇹 🇳🇱 🇫🇮 🇸🇪
💥Rutte: “the long-term aim is to bring Hungary to its knees on this...They must realise they are part of the EU & this community of values, which means in Hungary...no one can be discriminated against & can feel free on grounds of sexuality, skin color, gender whatever”
🇱🇺 Luxembourg’s gay PM Bettel on the law: "I didn't get up one morning after having seen an advert on the TV of some brand... and say 'I'm gay'. That's not how life works. It's in me, I didn't chose it. And to accept oneself is hard enough. To be stigmatised too-that's too much."
Rutte very moving: “There are too many of these sort of issues emerging. I never thought that when I got this job 11 years ago we would be having these discussions about such fundamental values”

🇷🇺🇪🇺He also doesn’t want an EU summit with Russia: “Not when I am there at least”

NEW: Mayor of London: “I asked the Commissioner...to give me an explanation of yesterday’s events. I am not satisfied with the explanation they have provided”
Remember: the Met Commissioner is directly accountable to BOTH the Mayor and the Home Secretary - one a Labour politician, one a Conservative
“The Commissioner is accountable in law...to the Mayor & is held to account for the delivery of policing by the Home Secretary & Mayor. Both have a role in appointing the Commissioner, with the decision taken by the Home Secretary following consultation with the mayor.”

It feels like many will think the Met has made a terrible miscalculation today that will look awful for days and weeks to come.

Now facing its greatest crisis since Stephen Lawrence?
The videos now circulating on social media will be played out across mainstream UK (and possibly global) media for days to come- this is going to be a *huge* crisis and I expect will lead to questions about just how tenable is the position of the current leadership of the Met.
Even the future Queen went to Clapham Common today- the Sunday newspapers will juxtapose her at the bandstand, and then police pulling women off it.

And that will be a very bad look.
