Today we have a good reminder of what Canadian bilingualism dynamics look like.

Francophones learn English to get a job and make a living.

The few Anglophones outside of Québec who learn French do so for self-growth.

It is not the same and never will be.

#Canada #Quebec
In Montréal, speaking English is often required to get a job with basic income. French is an after-thought. Why? Because the majority speaks English, either they are francophones or not.

I can't stress enough how hostile it feels.

#Canada #Quebec
If you glance rapidly at the job announcements in Québec, you will see many "English is mandatory, French is a bonus".

So an unilingual francophone can't get the same jobs as a unilingual anglophone. In Québec.

It is problematic on sooooo many levels.

#Canada #Quebec
I was told that clearly in a job interview.

And in another interview, the guy couldn't speak French so I had to do the interview in English.

It didn't go very well...

Reminder: This is happening in #Québec, not in Alberta.

#Canada
During a written exchange on LinkedIn with a recruiter, the fact that I wrote "merci, bonne soirée" at the end made them ask me for proof that I can speak English.

Because of 3 words in French, they immediately doubted my whole education.

Still in #Québec...

#Canada
This is happening everywhere in #Québec and it needs to be addressed.

Not learning French impacts the whole community and people have to understand that.

It is the reason why this thread is in English...

#Canada
If you live in Québec (for 2 years, 10, or your whole life), here's a good place to start to learn French 😁 quebec.ca/en/education/l…

You can also take free online classes to learn the basics such bonjour, merci, désolé. This means a lot 🥰
Also, never assume that someone speaks English. Simply ask «bonjour, parlez-vous anglais?» and they will either help you or redirect you the best they can ☺️

But if you assume they speak English, which is in the Québécois context the colonial language, they might get insulted 😬
