1/n: On the plus side, as the closed low drifts slowly westward the fires in #Quebec are likely to be *somewhat* less prolific in their smoke production today. In this loop you can see the clouds overspreading the fire region:
2/n: Looking at the thermal IR you can clearly see the fires and the clouds moving overhead
3/n: This likely means that the HRRR/RAP smoke forecasts for later today (image) are overdone, since they are (last I checked) based on persistence in the satellite detected fire data and don't have a coupled fire-atmosphere model. So maybe tomorrow's smoke won't be quite as bad. Image

Very proud of this team effort "A regional integrated assessment of the impacts of #climatechange and of the potential #adaptation avenues for #Quebec’s #forests" is now published

A (very long) thread. Buckle up!…

@cflscf @NRCan

First, I would like to acknowledge the work of all my colleagues including Jesus, Annie Claude, Yves, @mariehbrice, @DominicCyr, Louis, Daniel, @GauthierSylvie9 , Pierre, @Guillemette_L , Mathieu, Maryse, Tadeusz, Martin-Hugues, @ethiffault , @Tremblay_Jun and Stephen
Quebec’s #forests goes from northern hardwood with sugar #maple, beech, hemlock in the south, to pure boreal black #spruce forests up north. Natural #disturbances, go from single-tree windthrow or mortality in the south, to large stand-replacing #fires in the north.

1/7. NCCM and the CCLA (@cancivlib), alongside allies, are at the #Quebec Court of Appeal today to challenge #Bill21, the law that bars certain public servants from wearing religious symbols at work.

It must be struck down!
2/7. This law has demonstrated that as of right now, minorities in this country effectively don’t have rights. They only have permissions. Our government can take away our rights without any justification.
3/7. Bill 21 has devolved Quebec’s religious minorities into second-class citizens.

It must be repealed. #Bill21

Most of Europe has a serious fossil-fuel addiction problem.
#France is heavy on nuclear.
#Spain + #Portugal—lots of oil.
Coal in the east.
But check out #Denmark (the only place where renewables predominate) and the other Scandinavian countries (hydro).
Similar map for provinces of #Canada, where I live. The West and #Quebec have a lot of water...and thus hydroelectricity.

Not trying to make an invidious comparison here. Canada of course *produces* massive amounts of fossil fuels.

In #Europe, scores of places are lowering speed limits to 30 km/h. Almost 200 cities in #France have implemented the measure; traffic deaths in some have decreased by as much as 70 percent.
Meanwhile, Conservative Party in #Quebec campaigns on raising highway speeds to 120 km/h.
More info on the movement in France:…
And I'm aware highway/city speed limits are different.

Just trying to show how tone-deaf this (non-city-tax-paying) would-be politician is.

Did you know that #Canada had one of world's fastest passenger trains?

The Turbo Train made the run from #Montreal - #Toronto in 3h 59m in 1970.

It could top out at 270 km/h...
The lat time I took a @ViaRail train to #Toronto it averaged 90 km/h, and took over 5 hours. (Actually it was half an hour late, par for the course.)
Boggles the mind that in the 2020s we don't have frequent high-speed electric rail from #Quebec City to #Windsor. 50% of Canada's population is in the red zone below. People fly and drive instead. Such low-hanging fruit, but no government grasps it.

Pope Francis in #Quebec calls for a "discerning view" of the world instead of a "negative view".

This negative view is "often born of a faith that feels under attack and thinks of it as a kind of 'armour', defending us against the world...
Such a view, Francis explains, says “the world is evil, sin reigns” and risks becoming clothed in a “crusading spirit”.

"We need to be careful because this is not Christian"

A discerning view, by contrast, is "similar to that of God, who discerns what is good and persistently seeks it, sees it and nurtures it. This is no naïve view, but a view that discerns reality."

For those reasons, and others, I considered Switzerland an anomaly, hardly a model to be extrapolated to other nations. But I see its fantastic non-car transport options have a lot to teach the world.
I was staying near a village with a population of 780 in the canton of Vaud, in the foothills of the Jura Mountain. To get there from the #Geneva airport, I hopped on to a high-speed train, an escalator ride away from the baggage carousel... Image
Departures every 10 minutes or so, along the lakeshore of Lac Léman, to #Lausanne, #Vevey, #Montreux. Downtown #Geneva is *six minutes* away from the airport by train. Many of the trains have kids' playrooms on the upper levels. And of course you can take on a bicycle... Image

#Switzerland has the best public transit in the world.” 🇨🇭

I'd been to Switzerland a few times before, and was duly impressed with its rail network, and the transit in its larger cities... Image
