Tens of thousands of people died in early 2021 because politicians screamed "we can't lock down forever" in late 2020 while ignoring the fact the vaccine was ALREADY being rolled out so it was never going to be "forever".

A few more sensible months would have changed everything.
We're seeing the same idiotic non-argument being deployed by people pushing to preserve the 19 July "everything reopens" date no matter what.

"Are we supposed to lock down forever?" No, of course not.

We're vaccinating hundreds of thousands a day. And the population is finite.
That means we're guaranteed to get to a point where everyone who wants the vaccine has received both doses.

It's not going to take years and years.

But it will take longer than 19 July.

October looks much more realistic. And that's hardly "forever".
Meanwhile, most businesses are open now (except nightclubs) though with capacity restrictions.

We have to make do with social distancing and masks a bit longer, that's all.

Once we've all been vaccinated, then either:
- The pandemic's a non-issue
- Vaccines aren't the solution
If it turns out that vaccines aren't the solution (i.e. cases keep rising even with everyone double-dosed) then that's a really, really big problem.

But at least we'll know it. And we won't have sacrificed countless lives finding it out.

Woke up with a wild idea running through my head: why don't we rejoin the EU?!

Could be nuts, could be a lightbulb moment. Might at least be worth considering.

After all, as EU members, we could expect to enjoy...

1. Unfettered access to the largest trading bloc in the world.
2. No customs formalities, border checks or red tape.

No more food confiscated. No more lorry parks & queues of trucks.

Just free-flowing borders instead, supporting the just-in-time manufacturing that underpins millions of jobs in our automotive, aerospace and other sectors.
3. Free trade deals with over 80 countries around the world, plus the opportunity to shape future deals to our benefit by combining our negotiating experience with the rest of the EU's. (Our draft trade deal with Australia might help accelerate the EU's own efforts.)

Even the Sun is waking up to reality. (Daily Mail had its own moment of realisation a few days back.)

Brexit combined with the pandemic to create the perfect toxic stew. Consequence: empty shelves. Why? Because foreign drivers won't come to our unfriendly plague island any more. Image
There are different degrees of shortages.

Will we literally run out of food? Unlikely, given the Government can step in (e.g. by paying a hefty "danger money" bonus for drivers to come here).

But we could easily see a situation where you never know what will be in stock or not.
In other words, it could readily turn shopping into a lottery. And if you depend on particular products or product ranges, that means you could be bang out of luck.

But if all you're looking for is "adequate food" (cf Dominic Raab) you'll probably find *something* to eat.

There is a notion going around that the link between cases, hospitalisations and deaths has been broken by the vaccine.

The vaccine has helped. For sure. But people are still being hospitalised in rising numbers. They are also dying in rising numbers.

Weakened, yes. Broken, no.
Cases may be rising faster than hospitalisations, and hospitalisations may be rising faster than deaths but that doesn't take away from the fact that ALL THREE are currently rising.

Therefore...
More cases = more hospitalisations = more deaths.

It is vital to drive cases lower.
How do we do that?

Well, clearly not by using the vaccine as our only weapon.

If the vaccine were sufficient, we'd be seeing case numbers steady or falling. But we're not. They're going up, fast.

So we need to take extra measures until the vaccination programme catches up.

One of the most damaging impacts of Brexit is likely to come on 1 January 2022.

That's when the CE mark will no longer be valid for goods on sale in Great Britain (NI is an even more awkward case).

Instead, a new UKCA mark will be needed. This has a number of consequences...
1. GB manufacturers will incur the expense of separate UKCA and CE certification if they want to sell their products in the EU or to NI.

2. EU manufacturers will have to register UKCA marks just for 1 market out of 28. How many will have sales volumes that warrant that hassle?
3. Goods sold in NI will continue to need the CE mark.

4. Non-EU non-UK manufacturers will also need UKCA marks. Again, how many will bother with that extra bureaucracy, rather than just give up on the UK market?

There's a lot more on this here...

Has anyone in history been less gracious in victory than the Brexiters?

They got what they wanted.

But that hasn't been enough. It's never enough. Many continue to behave as if their fondest dream is to bathe in Remainer tears.

If someone's not hurting, they're not winning!
This intellectual sadism has become a substitute for Brexit wins as we would normally understand the concept, i.e. the things to be gained from Brexit.

That's because there aren't any. Or none that outweigh what we've lost.

So making a bad situation intolerable will have to do.
At the end of the day, Brexit is nothing more than the licence a group of bullies - a sadly large group, at that - need to beat up everyone else.

Only, they're not doing it stealthily behind the bike sheds, but heads held high in broad daylight in the middle of the street.

There's a tonne of additional Brexit-related changes coming down the pipe. We're not done with the upheaval yet!

I've laid out the timeline for these changes below.

30 June 2021: Deadline to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme in the UK.
1 July 2021: New EU VAT regime, affecting sales into the EU market by non-EU firms. Elimination of VAT exemption on low value consignments (previously up to EUR 22) so all goods imported into the EU will be liable to VAT.

1 July 2021: HTA licences required to import or export human tissue and cells between GB and the EEA.
