Dear White People —

Please ignore the people of color claiming to speak on my behalf, claiming that I'm terrified of you (I’m not), claiming that I live in fear of you (I don’t), claiming that we have nothing in common (we do), and claiming that we can’t come together (we can).
These people who usurp authority to speak on behalf of entire racial and ethnic minority groups are speaking primarily for themselves and for people susceptible to their cult-like message.

They are conflict entrepreneurs who profit off of fomenting and fueling division that may lead to violence.

They derive power from their ability to attract attention from both sides and keep both sides in conflict. They have counterparts on the other side who do the same.

While there may be something to learn from their public statements, it’s not what they would have you believe.

The lessons they can teach are what NOT to do.
Don’t fall for one-sided black & white narratives in which one group must be “good” and the other “evil”.

No one wins when enough people are convinced to believe in this worldview because each side will seek to destroy the other and take everyone else down with them in the process.
We are all more complex than this, regardless of race, ethnicity, skin color, nationality, religion, gender, and sexuality. This includes all the people trying to divide us by identity.
Pay less attention to the conflict entrepreneurs and get to know people as individuals. Don’t assume that we believe the same things that other people in our identity groups believe because of how we look or what’s in our Twitter bios.

Postscript:

If you know what this is in response to please just leave them alone. I’m not sharing because I believe more attention = more power.
But I felt compelled to say something because some people assume that silence on polarizing topics/posts/situations/individuals must mean agreement.
Silence can mean many other things including lack of awareness, lack of understanding, lack of time, fatigue, fear of being attacked, fear of losing friends, fear of losing employment.
But speaking up is important when you think people are misrepresenting you and trying to lead others off a cliff.
I believe that most people want to see more of this and less of the kind of world that conflict entrepreneurs and extremists push. Read the thread and watch the videos. This story is uplifting. 💓

1. Absolutely hilarious to see that of the 3 tweets I clicked on from people saying they would now boycott Toyota or encouraging others to do so, all were tweeting from their iPhones.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn_s…
2. I understand the impulse to boycott companies when you find out they're doing something you don't like but let's be real, the vast majority of people engage in selective boycotts when it suits them, ...
3. ... even if the other products they use and the stores they shop at are companies engaging in questionable labor practices or illegal/unethical sourcing of materials.

1. Just watched this moving short documentary about Ignacio Echeverría, a Spanish skateboarder, lawyer, and banker who lost his life in the 2017 London Bridge attack while fighting with one of the terrorists.

2. Ignacio had been out skating with friends that day and had his skateboard with him. He used it to hit one terrorist who was attacking a French woman (who survived) and then fought with another terrorist who was attacking a police officer.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignacio_E…
3. Ignacio was stabbed twice in the back by the second terrorist he fought with. He’d been separated from his friends but Dr. Jonathan Moses who was having dinner nearby at the time of the attack tried to save his life. Ignacio Echeverría was 39.

1. While reading up on the driver who was just charged with 2nd-degree intentional murder for a crash in Uptown Minneapolis that killed a protester, I’ve been seeing mentions of a truck driver who drove through hundreds of protesters on I-35W on 5/31/20.

2. I remember seeing the footage last year year and wondering what was going through the trucker’s mind. The videos did not look good. But if he was intent on killing protesters, why did he stop suddenly & how did everyone survive?

3. I recently learned from a local that there was more to Bogdan Vechirko’s story than I’d seen in initial reports.

This thread will look at his story and how the media covered it. #ComplicateTheNarrative

1. Wow, has this ever happened elsewhere?

50 officers, detectives and sergeants on the Portland Police Bureau’s Rapid Response Team voted to resign from the team last night. This will remain on the job. This is the team that handles crowd control at protests among other duties.
2. Acting Portland Police Chief Chris Davis speaking about the mass resignations at a Zoom press conference.

3. Full press conference on Portland Police Bureau mass resignations from Rapid Response Team.

Yikes. This is one of the big stories in Minneapolis today.
2. Update:

Police have identified the victim as 36-year-old Adam Richard Johnson. No cause of death yet. Still asking the public for help in finding out what led up to his death.

3. Investigators still haven’t been able to locate all of Adam’s body parts. So far they’ve found pieces of him in 2 locations in Minneapolis.

1. Watching the bandwagon effect in real time when you don't want to jump on the bandwagon is always interesting.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwagon…
2. We often feel pressure to jump on a bandwagon or at least comment on it.
3. Curious if people feel the pressure to jump on a bandwagon is mostly internal or external? Or both?
