Good morning, who would like to hear about hyena clitorises? Well, great news for those of you who do (and terrible news for those who don't) because you're going to hear about hyena clitorises now.
Female spotted hyenas are unusual in the animal kingdom for two reasons:
1. They don't have an external vaginal opening
2. They have a clitoris so anatomically similar to a penis it's often referred to in literature as a pseudo-penis.
Hyena clitorises - like all clitorises - are comprised of erectile tissue, but hyena clitorises have some added functions. As well as sticking out more and being shaped like a penis, they pee through their clitorises, have sex and give birth through it. From The Ontogeny of the Urogenital System of the Spotted Hy
From the outside it can be very difficult to spot the difference between male hyena junk and female hyena junk but there are differences: the shape of the glans is different. From The Ontogeny of the Urogenital System of the Spotted Hy
Nevertheless, it can be a little difficult, and sometimes you might need to feel the scrotum (yes, female hyenas have those too!) to see if there's any balls inside it.
Female hyenas can also be identified from other, non-genital characteristics: they're usually more muscular and more dominant than male hyenas.
To establish hierarchy among hyenas, subordinate females will lick the clitorises of the dominant females. Male hyenas will also lick clitorises, but females never lick the males' penises, because males are always lower rank.

Females also lick each other's clits as a greeting.
Oh, and did we mention that hyena clitorises have spines? They have spines, too.
The phallic hyena clitoris has evolutionary advantages. It is impossible for a male to coerce a female hyena because sex is a vast logistical challenge for the males. Males have to slide under to line the penis up with the clitoris.
The clitoris retracts in on itself, which creates an opening - this action has been described as "like rolling up a shirtsleeve" if you're trying to visualise hyenas doing it.
The logistics of putting a penis into something which is functionally very similar to a penis, and also erect, is complicated, and young males often have to spend months practising to get the knack of it.
Unfortunately for female hyenas, with anatomy like this, childbirth can be challenging. About 15% of hyenas die the first time they give birth, and following birth their clitorises become slack and split.
Historically, due to the external anatomical similarities, spotted hyenas were thought to be hermaphrodites - it was only in the 18th century that the female hyena's unique anatomy started to be understood.
We'll conclude here by requesting that Disney must urgently release the anatomically correct hyena cut of The Lion King.

On this day in 1978, the rainbow flag flew for the first time, at San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Hoisting the flag in 1978. ...
It can be hard to make out all the colours in contemporary photos from the time, but the original rainbow flag designed by Gilbert Baker consisted of eight colour stripes. Rainbow flags flying at San...
There was meaning attached to each of the colours in the rainbow flag: pink for sex; red for life; orange for healing; yellow for sunlight; green for nature; turquoise for magic and art; indigo for serenity; and violet for spirit.

A very happy birthday to entertainer Josephine Baker, born on this day in 1906. Baker had a huge list of achievements including being a French Resistance agent, a civil rights activist and the first black woman to star in a major movie. She also might have dated Frida Kahlo.
Although she was born in the USA, much of Baker's career took place in Europe due to racism in the country of her birth. In France, she was the most successful American entertainer.
Among her achievements in her career in Europe, she starred in silent movie Siren Of The Tropics, the first black woman lead in a major film; was often accompanied on stage by a cheetah; and was seen as an icon of the Jazz Age.

Joking aside, we'd like to take a moment to talk about how basic anatomical words like "vagina" get caught up in algorithms as obscene (and the very real struggle we face every day)
Organisations like us, who deal with gynaecological health and/or sex education, are constantly getting flagged by digital platforms and struggle with making ourselves heard. We live in a world where stigma and shame are a very real thing.
In the digital world, many moderation processes are automated. We've moved on a little from "the Scunthorpe problem", where an English town was blocked by rude word filters because it has one in the middle of it... But not by much.

HAPPY SHAKESPEARE'S BIRTHDAY! Here at the VM, we love a good pun, but Will was the master of pussy puns. Today, we'd like to be the cool English teacher sitting backwards on the chair, and present to you an annotated guide to some of the Bard's best sneaked-in vagina jokes...

The word of the day is "mittelschmerz". Literally "middle pain", it's a feeling of pain when you ovulate. It happens about 14 days before your period, and about 20% of people report it happening occasionally or usually.
Mittelschmerz is felt in your lower abdomen as a sharp twinge or dull cramp. In some people it only lasts a minute, while others might feel it for a day or two. Sometimes you'll be able to notice which ovary it's coming from, as the pain will be towards one side.
It's usually not severely painful - if ovulation is very painful for you, see a doctor as it might be a symptom of endometriosis, or scarring from surgery or an STI.

Meet Realdo Colombo. In 1559, this Italian anatomist claimed to have discovered the clitoris, then promptly died (for unrelated reasons)
We'll start by saying that obviously, Colombo didn't discover the clitoris. Anyone with one probably noticed it was there, since it's RIGHT THERE.
It also wasn't like Colombo was the first anatomist to point out the clitoris - it was known since antiquity among Greek, Persian and Arabic anatomists, on account of it being RIGHT THERE.
