SBC Thread. 1. Last night I spent 20 minutes after a congregational business meeting defending our church connection to the #SBC.
2. These are relatively new believers who somehow went down the rabbit hole of SBC Twitter. Mind you - they don’t know the difference between @drjamesmerritt and @HunterCrowder6, @drmoore or @BethMooreLPM.
3. They said “Why in the world are we affiliated with a group that treats one another like that!?!” They were appalled at the vitriol, meanness, snark and “gotcha” attitude.
4. Then they told me they hosted a zoom Bible study for seekers on the weekends, and that one guy (not a believer) said “Please tell me you guys are involved with that Southern Baptist group. They are awful!” He was referring to what he had read on social media.
5. Our church is a legacy, downtown, First Baptist Church. SBC for the past 120 years. Charter members of our local Baptist Association. And now I’m having to defend our relationship.
6. Of course I’m happy to explain why we are SBC. Over 3000 fully funded missionaries. 100’s of church plants every year. Disaster relief. The 6 best seminaries in the world. All guided by our common confession of faith. It’s the best thing going.
7. Plus we love Florida Baptists. Our State Convention is phenomenal. I would network with the Florida Baptist Convention even if the rest of the SBC quit.
8. I just think the level of attack mentality on here hurts our witness with outsiders. BUT it also wounds the enthusiasm for our cooperative work with people INSIDE our churches.
9. Maybe instead of trying to own each other on Twitter we could do the hard work of picking up the phone, having some face to face meetings, and working this stuff out.
10. “We already tried that and it didn’t work - the other side are all dishonest.” Some people ARE dishonest.
11. But I believe our SBC is MOSTLY good people, trying to do good things, with a good heart. We need more kind people on here speaking more generously and more kindly. Or else the mean people will speak for all the people. I’m afraid that’s what’s happening now.

1. THREAD: One white guy’s thoughts on why it is important to say that Black Lives Matter right now. Black lives matter because every black person is made in the image of God.
2. Black lives matter because they are beautiful & vital parts of God’s creation & our communities & our families & our churches. Black lives matter & they are wanted and needed in our daily lives and for the good of this world. It is important to say so right now.
3. Black lives matter. Of course ALL lives matter. But black lives have been under particular, peculiar, systemic pressure & threat & harm & subject to unjust treatment in this country for so long. Whites should read @DavidAFrench’s recent article for help seeing systemic racism.

ONE MAN’S THOUGHTS ON AHMAUD ARBERY’S DEATH:(Thread) The killing is terrible. Sickening. Reprehensible on every level. But the crimes committed against him in the 70+ days after his death were just as bad if not worse.
2. Ahmaud Arbery was gunned down in the street. The video combined with the shooters’ own testimony shows that he died trying to evade armed men who were illegally chasing him.
3. He was boxed in by multiple vehicles & ambushed. It appears that he became too tired to run anymore, and made a last ditch effort to defend himself. That’s when he was shot to death.

1. CHURCH LEADERSHIP THOUGHTS ON SHELTERING/DISTANCING/REOPENING. (Thread): Somehow we have gone from TEMPORARY “shelter in place” and “social distancing” so we could “flatten the curve” to “everyone stay isolated until we get a vaccine.”
2. This all started with shelter in place & social distancing to protect the vulnerable and keep from overwhelming our hospitals. Nearly all church leaders complied in order to set a good example and love our neighbors.
3. We were told we needed to “flatten the curve.” The reason to flatten the curve is to make sure our healthcare system is not overwhelmed. Mission accomplished (at least for now) in almost every community outside NYC.

1. THREAD on why most churches are not re-opening anytime soon - that possiblity isn’t realistic. Schools can’t reopen. Sports aren’t coming back. Neither are concerts, movies, or malls. Not anytime soon. At least not for long. Its because of current quarantine protocols.
2. Current quarantine protocols are the issue. Right now if someone tests positive for COVID-19 they are expected to quarantine for 2 weeks. Likewise, everyone who was directly exposed to them is supposed to quarantine for 2 weeks. Think about the implications of this approach.
3. Think schools - school buildings are not designed for social distancing. If a kid in English class tests positive the whole class has to go home. If a kid on the football team is positive the whole team has to go home. Schools & sports can’t function like that.

THREAD on Church Leadership & Coronapocalypse: 1. As far as I can tell the “flatten the curve” strategy will require social distancing at near-current levels until there is a vaccine.
2. Attempted “returns to normal” will likely result in renewed outbreaks.
3. Until a majority of people have either had it or been vaccinated, the virus will spread quickly and dangerously. So we are talking 12-18 months of what we are doing now if we continue with this strategy.

Thoughts on churches and COVID-19 (CDC 50 person limit):

1. The issue is social distancing. Experts are saying that social distancing is one of the keys to “lengthening the curve” and keeping vulnerable people safe.
2. If the point is social distancing, then we should really think about pressing pause an ALL gatherings that we can. Possible exceptions where you can adequately keep 6 feet of distance between people. Like for meetings or whatever.
3. So I have a concern for leaders who are pressing the CDC on whether limits apply to churches and whether 50 people is a reasonable limit and how churches can gather in homes or onsite - I think we should do a better job getting with the spirit of the guidelines.
