1.The #SBC22 #SBC2022. Who runs this place? There are about 700 people that can be said to actually run the SBC. You want to change the direction? You want to maintain the direction? These 700 or so people hold the keys. A thread 🧵. 2. You might think: “I’m not one of those people. I’m a no name messenger. My voice doesn’t matter.” But that’s not true. YOUR ONE VOTE sets a whole process in motion.

SBC Thread. 1. Last night I spent 20 minutes after a congregational business meeting defending our church connection to the #SBC. 2. These are relatively new believers who somehow went down the rabbit hole of SBC Twitter. Mind you - they don’t know the difference between @drjamesmerritt and @HunterCrowder6, @drmoore or @BethMooreLPM.

1. THREAD: One white guy’s thoughts on why it is important to say that Black Lives Matter right now. Black lives matter because every black person is made in the image of God. 2. Black lives matter because they are beautiful & vital parts of God’s creation & our communities & our families & our churches. Black lives matter & they are wanted and needed in our daily lives and for the good of this world. It is important to say so right now.

ONE MAN’S THOUGHTS ON AHMAUD ARBERY’S DEATH:(Thread) The killing is terrible. Sickening. Reprehensible on every level. But the crimes committed against him in the 70+ days after his death were just as bad if not worse. 2. Ahmaud Arbery was gunned down in the street. The video combined with the shooters’ own testimony shows that he died trying to evade armed men who were illegally chasing him.

1. CHURCH LEADERSHIP THOUGHTS ON SHELTERING/DISTANCING/REOPENING. (Thread): Somehow we have gone from TEMPORARY “shelter in place” and “social distancing” so we could “flatten the curve” to “everyone stay isolated until we get a vaccine.” 2. This all started with shelter in place & social distancing to protect the vulnerable and keep from overwhelming our hospitals. Nearly all church leaders complied in order to set a good example and love our neighbors.

1. THREAD on why most churches are not re-opening anytime soon - that possiblity isn’t realistic. Schools can’t reopen. Sports aren’t coming back. Neither are concerts, movies, or malls. Not anytime soon. At least not for long. Its because of current quarantine protocols. 2. Current quarantine protocols are the issue. Right now if someone tests positive for COVID-19 they are expected to quarantine for 2 weeks. Likewise, everyone who was directly exposed to them is supposed to quarantine for 2 weeks. Think about the implications of this approach.

THREAD on Church Leadership & Coronapocalypse: 1. As far as I can tell the “flatten the curve” strategy will require social distancing at near-current levels until there is a vaccine. 2. Attempted “returns to normal” will likely result in renewed outbreaks.

Thoughts on churches and COVID-19 (CDC 50 person limit):

1. The issue is social distancing. Experts are saying that social distancing is one of the keys to “lengthening the curve” and keeping vulnerable people safe. 2. If the point is social distancing, then we should really think about pressing pause an ALL gatherings that we can. Possible exceptions where you can adequately keep 6 feet of distance between people. Like for meetings or whatever.

1. We don’t have to be unanimous on all issues to be united on the most important issues. Unity doesn’t require unanimity. (Thread 1/7) #SBC19 #sbc2019 2. How about we commit to love people for the best things about them? And resist the urge to highlight every perceived flaw or minor error? Because the world is watching and laughing at the vitriol on display in our petty, intramural debates. (Thread 2/7) #sbc19 #sbc2019

Why Pastors and High School Head Coaches have similar jobs: THREAD

1. Both coaches & pastors are semi-public figures in the community. They occasionally appear at community events, speak publicly outside of their workplace, and are covered by local press (and sometimes beyond). 2/2 Both coaches and pastors tend to be modestly paid, although they must interact as peers with people of all socio-economic classes, including people who make much more and much less than they do.

I do not believe in transferable church membership and I do not believe in transferable ordination. Each church must take responsibility for its own vetting & qualifying of members and leaders. But networks of churches can assist one another in vetting & qualifying by appropriately sharing publicly available information. And there is strong momentum for the SBC to get a lot more intentional on this effort. I’m glad.
