Happy #MonopolyMonday!

With the Fourth of July right around the corner, we’ll be spotlighting the various monopolies you’ll likely encounter around the holiday. 🇺🇸

From fireworks to beer & hotels for your weekend getaway, these industries are controlled by one or a few corps.
2/ One of the most exciting things that Americans look forward to on the 4th is fireworks. 🧨

What most Americans do not know is that it’s nearly impossible to buy American-made fireworks to celebrate w/ on the 4th.

news-leader.com/story/news/loc…
3/ Because there are so few American-made fireworks, 98-99% of fireworks purchased in the U.S. come from China. 🎆

And one businessman controls ~70% of those fireworks, which has allowed him to raise prices & block competitors from entering the market.
washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/…
4/ While you await the fireworks spectacular, it’s likely you’ll kick back w/ a cold beer, seltzer or soda. 🍺🥤

Whatever your drink of choice is, it’s probably owned by one of the beer monopolists (@abinbev & @MolsonCoors) or soft drink monopolists (@CocaCola & @PepsiCo).
5/ You might notice higher prices or lower supply of 🍔s & 🌭s for your BBQ on the 4th.

That’s also because of monopolies.

"This lack of processing capacity is…a bottleneck that prevents farmers from growing in response to consumers’ increasing demand."

6/ And if you head out of town for the holiday weekend & stay in a hotel, it’s likely a subsidiary of @Marriott or @WyndhamHotels, which own 30 and 18 hotel brands respectively. 🏨
7/7 Regardless of how you spend your 4th of July, you’ll likely encounter one — or more — monopolies along the way.

Check out our “Illusion of Choice” report to see what other dominant corporations you may come across during the holiday weekend 👇

In a new letter to the @FTC, @RepKatiePorter is calling on the agency to investigate collusion between Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk & Sanofi to raise insulin prices. 👏👏👏

The @FTC has the opportunity to save lives. They must #InvestigateInsulinNow.
@RepKatiePorter’s letter makes it clear: the @FTC must #InvestigateInsulinNow b/c corporate collusion to raise insulin prices is killing those whose lives depend on it.

If you agree, sign our petition calling on @FTC to investigate the insulin cartel 👇

3/ This is urgent.

As @dingeratemybaby shared at the first #InvestigateInsulinNow event, a recent survey from @t1international revealed that over 1/4 of diabetics in the U.S. rationed their insulin in the previous year & cost is a likely barrier.

Amazon has long abused its workers, sellers, and consumers — no matter what the monopoly’s executives say on Twitter.

THREAD 🧵👇
2/ From union busting to endangering drivers and warehouse workers to stealing intellectual property, Amazon is such a bad actor we had to make a tracker just to keep up with all the abuse. 👇

3/ During the House Antitrust Subcommittee’s hearing in July, @RepLucyMcBath shared a story of a once-successful third-party book seller on Amazon.

But Amazon recognized this sellers’ success & retaliated against them.

Happy #MonopolyMonday!

This week, we’re talking about concentration in the health care industry.

From hospitals to insurers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, retail pharmacies, PBMs and everything in between…nearly every part of the health care industry is concentrated. 💊🏥🩺
2/ Among other things, the 2010 ACA made health care integration & consolidation an explicit goal.

But as a framer of the ACA realized in 2016, “having every provider in health care ‘owned’ by a single org is more likely to be a barrier to better care.”

3/ Hospital consolidation has become a crisis.

In fact, a 2017 @politico analysis estimated that 2/3s of all U.S. hospitals were part of a chain. 🏥

Today, Economic Liberties is proud to release “The Courage to Learn."

It's a deeply researched case for abandoning the consumer welfare approach & a comprehensive, new antitrust and competition policy agenda for Congress & the Biden administration.

2/ As @sarahmillerdc explains, “The Courage to Learn tells a previously untold but crucial story about how America’s economy works and why it’s not working well for so many of us.”
3/ “The Courage to Learn” examines the real-world implications of the widespread adoption of the “consumer welfare standard,” which encourages consolidation under the banner of efficiency.

Spoiler alert: it hasn’t been good.

1/ Happy #MonopolyMonday & #NationalMilkDay! 🥛

This week, we’ll be spotlighting America’s largest dairy monopoly— @dfamilk.
2/ After multiple acquisitions, @dfamilk now controls ~30% of all raw milk in the U.S.

Most recently, they announced in February 2020 that they would be acquiring @deanfoods, the largest producer of milk in the U.S., for $425 million.
cnbc.com/2020/02/17/dai…
3/ @deanfoods owned nearly 50 brands…and more than 40 of them were dairy products. 😳

Now, many of these brands and subsidiaries are owned by @dfamilk.
