/ Pre-clinical med students—Immerse yourself in what you’re learning. Remember that you’re building a foundation to be a great doctor, not just preparing for exams.
/ Clinical med students—Spend time with your patients; you have more time now than ever again. Keep an open mind about each specialty. Once you decide, pay even more attention on all the rotations you won’t pursue. They will be your colleagues one day; learn how they think.
/ Interns—Never worry alone. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it; even attendings ask for help all the time (that’s what consults are!). When I’m doubt, go see the patient. Take care of yourself, and remember that this phase is temporary.
/ Residents—Embrace your new role by taking care of your interns. Let go of some of the intern work so that you can grow into a supervisory role. Coffee and candy can do wonders for team morale. And when in doubt, go see the patient.
/ Cardiology fellows—Most of your consults will be about things you already know well. Remember that you were once a scared intern too; be kind to those calling you. And when in doubt, go see the patient—cardiology cannot be done well via Epic alone.
/ Best of luck to all those starting new roles tomorrow! Have some fun!
