Mauritius is opening so here's a thread of some of my favourite beaches πŸŒŠπŸŠβ€β™‚οΈβ›΅

RT, spread joy, get tourism industry back on its feet πŸ™‚πŸ’ͺ🏽 Image
Grand Baie up on the north coast. Sand, sea, boats 😍 Image
Calodyne. Very coastal village vibe. Super peaceful. I love it. Image
Mont Choisy. We're still on the north coast, where most of the best beaches are imho*

*It's a heated topic in Mauritius 😁 Image
Albion. On the west coast. Not the best place to swim perhaps, but looks gorgeous. (And only 15min drive from where I live 😬) Image
Flic en flac. You'll find me here πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ 3-4 days a week. Image
La Preneuse. Or where the sea is always warm. Image
Case Noyale. Not a beach. But it's my favourite coastal village. And kids from the village are always up for a chat while they show off their tree dangling skills haha. Image
La Gaulette. Popular spot as you can see. Image
Le Morne, down on the south west coast. The public beach is usually teeming with people. But mix with the locals on the less hectic south-most side. Image
Near Baie du Cap in the south. Not a beach but a pilgrimage site for tourists. And you can see why! Image
Blue Bay 😍😍😍 10min drive from the airport, just saying. Also site of a large marine park so bring your snorkeling gear. Image
Belle Mare. East coast. The longest beach in Mauritius. Two kilometres of sand, sea and happiness. Image
Pereybere!!! My favourite place on earth. It is just the best, man. It is just the best 😍 ImageImage
Le Bouchon. At sunset. Image
Île d'Ambre, one of the any islets around mainland Mauritius. Image

Mauritian football is bonkers.

From players wearing different kits in a game and a sordid case of voyeurism … to #Mauritius now on the verge of being suspended by FIFA.

This is the badshit crazy world of the Mauritius Football Association 🧡 Mauritian football players ...
Mauritius Football Association (MFA) is football's governing body.

In 2013 its president was accused of match fixing. He went on gardening leave but denied wrongdoing.

Incredibly, he threatened to keep attending international meetings. Maybe he enjoyed the free flights?
That same year, MFA got a new president.

A full decade later, Mauritius' men's team is ranked 180th in the world. Women's team is dead last!

Bloke is still Mr MFA Prez. (Although some will contest this but more on that later.)

How he's still prez beggars belief ⬇️ MFA president receiving a s...

The UK is on the verge of decolonising #Mauritius completely.

It has signalled that it would return the #Chagos Islands to Mauritius in a few months.

But Chagos houses a massive American military base. So how real will the decolonisation actually be?

Thread ⬇️ Sunset photo of Chagos. Sand with pink light in the foregrou
4 scenarios:

1. UK hands the Chagos back cleanly and lets Mauritius decide how to proceed wrt the American base.

A clean relinquishing of its claim to Chagos aligns with international law.

The UK and international law lol. So perhaps this scenario is unlikely.
2. UK hands back Chagos Islands without Diego Garcia, the island that actually houses the base.

Chagos is an archipelago of 58 islands. They could hand back 57 of them

Spot the trend: we'll grant you independence if you give us Chagos. We'll give you Chagos if you give us Diego

πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ί Territory of Mauritius is 1,000x larger than the size of Mauritius island.

😍 Many smaller, gorgeous islands (+ huge maritime territory) scattered all over the Indian Ocean form part of Mauritius.

Diego Garcia. It now houses a major US military base.

Illegally annexed by the British from Mauritian territory 50+ years ago, and its inhabitants were evicted.

The UK still refuses to completely decolonise Mauritius despite the UN ruling in favour of Mauritian sovereignty. Sunset in Diego GarciaAmerican military base on D...
Agalega. India is currently building a military base on the island, after years of rapprochement between the Modi government and the rightwing Mauritian government.

The <500 inhabitants of Agalega now have their movements restricted and fear expulsion altogether. Beautiful beach in AgalegaIndian military in Agalega
