Once in Missouri we went to a line dancing place and my boyfriend had a panic attack

in fairness when we got there they were doing an extremely aggressive line dance

They were dancing around in their cowboy boots and then in the middle they stopped and were like “FUCK YOU” and all the men were like “SUCK MY DICK” and all the women were like “LICK MY CLIT” and then the women were like something something and the men were like “FUCKING BITCH”

“Mobbing” in this sense is a social phenomenon where people gang up on someone, monstering the victim to justify it, with the “goal” of somehow “eliminating” them. It’s normally talked about wrt workplaces and schools; I’m going to adjust it for Online. How it works:

1. There’s a normal, expectable conflict or disagreement.

Tbc it is not true that none of the helicopter story’s critics seriously read it.

I read the story as about a cis woman who undergoes conversion therapy—neurosurgery to change her gender identity—in part because of the ways womanhood can suck even if your brain is at home in it (and the ways having your brain attuned to it specifically can suck).

That’s pretty close to how terfs portray trans men! I think the addition of substantive gender identity is pretty transformative, but if you read it as the story of an afab trans person, it really can look close to the terf one.

To be clear I do not at all mean Fall wasn’t seriously harmed, she demonstrably was. I just think a different kind of group social harm is maybe being assimilated into a story of another mass Twitter pile on, & responsibility diffused into an enormous mob that didn’t really exist

I think it was a mobbing, but a “mobbing” in the sense that also occurs in workplaces and schools, group aggression whose engine is monstering the target, where individuals do play key roles
